Item Description: BROOKINGS INSTITUTION, United States, 2013. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Brand New Book. The relationship between criminal syndicates and politicians has a long history, including episodes even from the earliest years of America s colonies. But while organized crime may not get the headlines it once did in North America, the resurgence of such criminal activity in Latin America, and in some European nations, has grabbed the public s attention. In Dangerous Liaisons noted scholars describe and analyze the role of organized crime in the financing of politics in selected democracies in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico) and in Europe (Bulgaria and Italy). The book seeks to unravel the myths that have developed around crime in these locales, while providing facts and informing the debate on how organized crime corrupts democratic institutions, especially in relation to the funding of political parties and their activities. Among the subjects studied in detail are the role of organized crime in political finance through the lens of Argentina s presidential campaigns of 1999 and 2007; Brazil s elected officeholders and their role in corruption; the weakness of Colombia s democracy; the growing role of money in Costa Rica s politics; the destructive effects of drug money on Mexican institutions; the link between organized crime - narrowly and broadly understood - and political financing in Bulgaria; and crime and political finance in Italy. The work of the scholars corrects what volume editor Kevin Casas-Zamora calls a glaring gap in the literature on the role of organized crime in the corruption of democratic institutions. That is, the funding of political parties and their activities - which in these cases are mostly election campaigns. The chapters not only present the evidence but also can be regarded as a call to action. Contributors include Leonardo Curzio (CISAN/UNAM), Donatella della Porta (European University Institute), Delia Ferreira Rubio (a member of the international board of directors of Transparency International), Mauricio Rubio (a researcher at the External University of Colombia), Daniel Smilov (Center for Liberal Strategies, Sofia), Bruno Wilhelm Speck (University of Campinas), and Alberto Vannucci (University of Pisa). Excerpt: Rubens Gonçalves 'Rubinho' Barrichello (Portuguese pronunciation: , born May 23, 1972 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian Formula One racing driver. He is currently racing for Williams F1. Barrichello has scored the fourth highest points total in Formula One history. Barrichello drove for Ferrari from 2000 to 2005, as Michael Schumacher's teammate, enjoying considerable success including finishing as championship runner-up in 2002 and 2004. Schumacher's retirement at the end of 2006 made Barrichello the most experienced driver on the grid, and at the 2008 Turkish Grand Prix he became the most experienced driver in F1 history. He became the first driver to reach 300 Grand Prix entries and 300 starts, doing so in 2010. He is also the incumbent chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association. Both his father and paternal grandfather are also named Rubens, and Barrichello shares his father's birthday: May 23. Therefore, Rubens Barrichello was known as Rubinho (Portuguese for 'little Rubens'), which has become his nickname. Barrichello won five karting titles in Brazil before going to Europe to race in the Formula Vauxhall Lotus series in 1990. In his first year, he won the championship, a feat he replicated the following year in the British Formula 3 Championship, beating David Coulthard. He very nearly joined Formula One, the highest category of single seater racing, at just 19 years of age. Instead he competed in Formula 3000 in 1992. He finished third in the championship, and joined the Jordan Formula One team for the 1993 Formula One season. During this time, and also early in his Formula One career, Barrichello lived in Banbury and Cumnor, Oxfordshire, UK. As a young, aspiring driver, Barrichello looked up to the late Ayrton Senna, and when he joined Formula One, Senna in return considered him his protégé. Barrichello had an effective rookie year. In his third race, the European Grand Prix, he started from 12th pl. 36 pp. Englisch. Bookseller Inventory # 9781156096345

Bookseller Inventory # 9781159253523

Excerpt: Carlos Augusto da Silva Peres is a Brazilian field biologist who works in the Amazon and other neotropical forest regions on questions involving wildlife and biological conservation. His interests are in (i) the large-scale patterns of large-bodied vertebrate diversity and abundance in Amazonian forests; (ii) the effects of different forms on human disturbance, including hunting, habitat fragmentation and wildfires, on Amazonian forest vertebrates; and (iii) reserve selection and design criteria in relation to regional gradients of biodiversity value and implementation costs. He currently co-directs three research programs on natural resource management in eastern, southern and western Amazonia focusing on the ecology of natural and heavily modified landscapes and their role in the retention of biodiversity. Born in Belém, Brazil, in 1963, Carlos Peres was exposed to Amazonian natural history from early childhood, and his father's ranch in eastern Pará, consisting largely of primary forest, became his playground. For the last 20 years he has been studying wildlife community ecology in Amazonian forests and the biological criteria for designing nature reserves. He currently is involved in four research programs on the ecology of key timber and nontimber forest resources in different parts of Amazonia. He has published over 160 papers on neotropical forest ecology and conservation at scales ranging from single populations to entire regional landscapes. In 1995 he received a 'Biodiversity Conservation Leadership Award,' and in 2000 he was elected an 'Environmentalist Leader for the New Millennium' by Time Magazine. He is currently (2009) a Full Professor at the University of East Anglia, UK, and divides his time between Norwich and fieldwork in the Brazilian Amazon. He helped the Portuguese national team reach third place at the 1966 World Cup, being the top goalscorer of the tournament with nine goals (six of which were scored at Goodison Park), becoming the first player to receive the honour after it was officially established, and elected the Bronze Ball player. He won the European Footballer of the Year award in 1965 and was runner-up in 1962 and 1966. He played for Benfica for 15 years out of his 22 years as a footballer, thus being manly associated with the Portuguese club, and is the team's all-time top scorer. He also won the Bota de Prata (Primeira Liga top scorer award) seven times, in 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970 and 1973, an unmatched feat. He was the first ever player to win the European Golden Boot award, in 1968, a feat he later replicated in 1973. Nicknamed The Black Panther, or The Black Pearl, or O Rei (The King) in Portugal, Eusébio scored 733 goals i. 56 pp. Englisch. Bookseller Inventory # 9781156040331

Amin joined the British colonial regiment, the King's African Rifles, in 1946, and eventually held the rank of Major General and Commander of the Ugandan Army prior to taking power in the military coup of January 1971, deposing Milton Obote. He later promoted himself to Field Marshal while he was the head of state. Amin's rule was characterized by human rights abuse, political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, nepotism, corruption, and gross economic mismanagement. The number of people killed as a result of his regime is estimated by international observers and human rights groups to range from 100,000 to 500,000. During his years in power, Amin was backed by Libya's Muammar al-Gaddafi as well as the Soviet Union and East Germany. In 1975-1976, Amin became the Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity, a pan-Africanist. 60 pp. Englisch. Bookseller Inventory # 9781155980508

Excerpt: Ronaldo de Assis Moreira (born 21 March 1980 in Porto Alegre), commonly known as Ronaldinho (Brazilian Portuguese: ) or Ronaldinho Gaúcho, is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Flamengo and the Brazilian national team. He is a two-time winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year, awarded to the best player over the year. He won the award in both 2004 and 2005. 'Ronaldinho,' the diminutive and term of endearment for 'Ronaldo,' is accompanied in Brazilian usage by the nickname 'Gaúcho,' in order to distinguish him from fellow footballer and countryman Ronaldo, who was known as 'Ronaldinho' in Brazil beforehand. Ronaldo simply went by his first name upon his move to Europe, thereby allowing Ronaldinho to drop the 'Gaúcho' and go by the name Ronaldinho abroad. Prior to his move to Flamengo, he played for Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona and Milan. With the Spanish club, he won his first Champions League in 2006 and the Ballon d'Or in 2005. He became a Spanish citizen in January 2007. He was also named in the FIFA 100, a list of the greatest footballers compiled by fellow countryman Pelé, and in the FIFPro World XI consecutively from 2004-2007. Ronaldinho was born in the city of Porto Alegre, the state capital of Rio Grande do Sul. His mother, Dona Miguelina Elói Assis dos Santos (daughter of Enviro Assis), is a former salesperson who studied to become a nurse. His father, João de Assis Moreira, was a shipyard worker and footballer for local club Esporte Clube Cruzeiro (not to be confused with Cruzeiro). He suffered a fatal heart attack in the family swimming pool when Ronaldinho was eight. After Ronaldinho's older brother, Roberto, . 68 pp. Englisch. Bookseller Inventory # 9781155913346
