Excerpt: . sound coming from the breeze through the bending tree-tops, all seem well calculated to beget fine thoughts--daring fancies--bold and striking emotions. You talk of taking life as if it were the crowning crime. It appears to me an error of society, by which the existence of a being, limited to a duration of years, is invested with so much importance. A few years lopped from the life of an individual is certainly no such loss, shortening, as it must, so many of his cares and troubles; and the true standard by which we should determine upon a deed, is the amount of good or evil which it may confer upon the person or persons immediately interested. That is not the standard, was his reply, since that would be making a reference to varying and improper tribunals to determine upon principles which should be even and immutable. To some men, from the operation of circumstances, or from their own improvidence, death would be welcome even by violence; and the feeling with which such a man would submit to the executioner, can surely afford no standard by which to determine upon the fate of others not so situated, and not having the same feeling or condition with himself. Life is a sacred something which we do not venerate enough. It is considered quite too lightly by society, and it appears to me, if we believe for a moment in the immortality of the soul and the doctrine of rewards and punishments, we have not the right, even in the case of the criminal, to doom him to a loss of it. The idea is horrible which conceives the murder of a human being, even according to the standard you suggest; for, leave the choice but a moment to the victim, and he will submit, in most cases, to the loss of all his possessions, and even of his liberty, to. Excerpt: . bright star now grew more bright, and of a deeper red, and shot forth the most angry fires on every side. Nothing could exceed the terrors of Anastasia. The star seemed now to approach her, and gust after gust, like the rushing of so many heavy wings, passed and repassed over the couch where she lay, lifting and rending its silken drapery. She cried aloud once more in her apprehension. Forgive, forgive me, dearest Albert--forgive me that I have offended. Come to me--be as thou wert--I will obey thee--I will never offend thee more. Too late--too late, cried a voice of sorrow rather than of anger from the bosom of the cloud, which now hung, like a dense wreath of vapour, just above the couch where she lay. It is too late, dearest Anastasia--I can return to thee no more. Wherefore--wherefore? was the interrogation of the terrified woman. It is the doom ! was the hollow answer from the cloud; and the star that still shone from the vague form before her seemed to shed drops of blood, that fell even upon the garments of her couch, as the mournful voice thus responded to her inquiry. Alas! alas! wherefore is this doom? she cried once more to the shadow and the star. Thou hast already asked too much. I warned thee, my Anastasia. Was it not enough to know that thou wert happy? Why wast thou not satisfied with thy condition? Thou hast destroyed the hope and the happiness of both by thy impatient thirst after the why and the wherefore. Alas! and for this are we to be disunited, my Albert--for so slight a cause as this are we to lose the blessing we have lived for? He replied to her in an allegory. Does the flower please thee? -- wherefore destroy it to know whence come the scent and the beauty? The odour flies when thou dost so--. Bookseller Inventory # APC9781230412665

William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) was a poet, novelist and historian from the American South whose novels achieved great prominence during the 19th century, with Edgar Allan Poe pronouncing him the best novelist America had ever produced. He first wrote poetry at the age of eight, and in his 19th year he produced a monody on Gen. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1825). Two years later, in 1827, Lyrical and Other Poems and Early Lays appeared. He then published Tile Vision of Cones, Cain and Other Poems (1829), The Tricolor; or, Three Days of Blood in Paris (1830) and his strongest poem, Atalantis: A Tale of the Sea (1832). His novel Martin Faber, an expanded version of an earlier short story called The Confessions of a Murderer, was published in 1833 and made Simms known to a national audience. He was one of the best, and most respected, historians of his day. His History of South Carolina (1842) served for several generations as the standard school textbook on the state s history. Other works include: The Yemassee (1835), Vasconselos (1853) and The Cassique of Kiawah (1859). Bookseller Inventory # APC9781409936305

Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1919 edition. Excerpt: . V PARITY OF BEING PARITY OF BEING I DEGREESHIS opens the way to the next branch * of the subject. If the human soul could reside in objects, why should not these objects themselves possess spirits? The evident conviction of early and primitive races as to the existence, form, and substance of the human soul has, it is believed, been adequately presented in the foregoing. But is the possession of soul limited by these races to humanity? Do primitive peoples regard other beings as also so endowed? The definition of animism already furnished involves an affirmative answer, but we must look a little further into this phase of the subject. There is an epigram of Christian pantheism which declares that God sleeps in the stone, dreams in the plant, awakens in the animal, and is selfconscious in man. * This expresses in some degree what primitive man thought of things about him, except that he would have demurred at the idea of mere sleep or dream of the sentient in the world of the non-human. He doubtless from the beginning made himself the measure of things. And so, as was briefly shown at the beginning of this discussion,2 any object in nature might be conceived by primitive or savage as a duality, like himself, the body of which was visible and tangible, and the soul, like his own, invisible except to the soul itself or to the skilled shaman. With the untutored, nothing exists in nature but may give occasion to this conception of possession of soul. Omaha Indians represent this by the statement that all forms mark where Wakonda has stopped and brought them into existence. Man . . . becomes literally a part of nature, connected with it physically and related to it psychically. So endowments of animals may be transferred to man, . And so, as was briefly shown at the beginning of this discussion,2 any object in nature might be conceived by primitive or savage as a duality, like himself, the body of which was visible and tangible, and the soul, like his own, invisible except to the soul itself or to the skilled shaman. Item Description: Dodo Press, United Kingdom, 2009. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) was a poet, novelist and historian from the American South whose novels achieved great prominence during the 19th century, with Edgar Allan Poe pronouncing him the best novelist America had ever produced.
