Item Description: Grove Press, 1998. Book Condition: Used. This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 100% Guaranteed. Summary: Cuba's riveting political upheavals and diverse ethnic heritage have helped create a remarkable body of literature in the twentieth century; however, this work has remained largely inaccessible to American readers. Now, in this rich anthology of Cuban stories, the work of such legends as Reinaldo Arenas, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, and Alfonso Hernandez-Cata is juxtaposed with that of younger writers such as Zoe Valdes and Jesus Vega to create a rich portrait of modern Cuban literature. The Voice of the Turtle showcases a variety of styles -- from magical realism to historical reminiscence to the experimental -- and covers a variety of topics, from the overtly political to the deeply personal. Some of these writers never left Cuba, and others have spent most of their lives exiled from their homeland; some draw on Cuba's rich storytelling tradition for their inspiration, while others have looked to writers such as Kafka and Joyce. The Voice of the Turtle is the definitive anthology of Cuban fiction from this century and will appeal not only to students of world literature but to anyone interested in a good story. Item Description: STOCKCERO, United States, 2011. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 224 x 152 mm. Language: Spanish Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. El angel de Sodoma (The Angel from Sodom, 1927) is the first novel in Spanish on male homosexuality. Written by the Cuban-Spanish writer Alfonso Hernandez-Cata (1885-1940) it tells the tragic story of Jose-Maria, the protagonist, and his continuous struggle with his homosexual instincts. Not unlike the novel, the sexological science of the time thought that homosexuality was an illness and not a crime. The second edition of El angel de Sodoma (1928) on which this edition is based, showcases a prologue by the Spanish thinker and endocrinologist Gregorio Maranon and an epilogue by the lawyer and politician Luis Jimenez de Asua in which the idea of homosexuality as illness is emphasized. What is missing though, and what this edition highlights, is that homosexuality has not only a somber side, as depicted in El angel de Sodoma: Alvaro Retana s short novels, for example, offer a more positive and optimistic view of homosexual desire. As the introduction to this edition and the numerous footnotes highlight, El angel de Sodoma is a modernist novel, influenced both by Latin American Modernism and by European Symbolism and its decadent aesthetics. But it is also a harshly naturalist account of modernity and tradition struggling with each other. El angel de Sodoma would be of general interest to courses and seminars on literature, sexuality and gender, and the history of Western thought. They would also be of interest to courses on Spanish literature and culture. Bookseller Inventory # AAV9781934768488

Item Description: STOCKCERO, United States, 2013. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 226 x 150 mm. Language: Spanish Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Alvaro Retana (1890-1970), who many consider The Spanish Petronius, belongs to that lighthearted erotic literature trend popular during the early twentieth Century, that became known in Spain as Sicalipsis (from ancient Greek sykon -fig, or vulva- and aleiptikos -to stimulate). In open opposition to the somber and solemn Spanish 98 generation, and other representatives of the so called high culture, Retana s popular erotic novelettes showcased the smiling and playful face of a country that during the 1920s and 1930s openly embraced European modernity and stood up to its challenges, among them the sexual revolution and explicit eroticism. Alvaro Retana, a flamboyant and openly homosexual artist, illustrator, fashion designer, and renowned composer of cuples (a cuple is a risque popular song usually sung in variety shows), is also the successful author of many sicaliptic novelettes, among them, the four short novels included in this volume. Retana is one of the first writers who, in Las locas de postin and other openly queer and sexually explicit novels, dare to depict the uninhibited sensuality of a free and happy-go-lucky Spain, soon to die at the hands of the Franco dictatorship. Retana s smiling and festive homoeroticism, clearly a forerunner of Almodovar s and Mendicutti s gay aesthetics, stands in stark contrast to the apocalyptic and pessimistic vision of homosexuality in Alfonso Hernandez-Cata s novel El Angel de Sodoma (Stockcero 2011), a novel, like Retana s fictions, meant to depict the gay underground world of early twentieth century Spain. Retana openly celebrates queer love, as well as the sexuality of women, both homosexual and straight. Novelettes such as Los ambiguos, Lolita buscadora de emociones, and El tonto amply instruct the unabashed tobillera, or Spanish flapper, in the pleasures of Venus. This volume comprises four of Retana s most successful novels, and with the critical foreword and footnotes by Maite Zubiaurre and Audrey Harris gives a clearer view of what the Spanish society was really reading while the high literature obtained all the academic applause. Item Description: STOCKCERO, United States, 2013. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 226 x 150 mm. Language: Spanish Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Alvaro Retana (1890-1970), who many consider The Spanish Petronius, belongs to that lighthearted erotic literature trend popular during the early twentieth Century, that became known in Spain as Sicalipsis (from ancient Greek sykon -fig, or vulva- and aleiptikos -to stimulate).
