Item Description: Oxford University Press, New York, 1997. Cloth. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. "Now, in 'The Oxford Book of Latin American Short Stories,' editor Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria brings together fifty-three stories that span the history of Latin American literature and represent the most dazzling achievements in the form. In his fascinating introduction, Gonzalez Echevarria traces the evolution of the short story in Latin American literature, explaining why the genre has flourished there with such brilliance, and illuminating the various cultural and literary tensions that resolve themselves in "magical realism." The stories themselves exhibit all the inventiveness, the luxuriousness of language, the wild metaphoric leaps and uncanny conjunctions of the ordinary with the fantastic that have given the Latin American short story its distinctive and unforgettable flavor". The short stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Julio Cortazar, Carlos Fuentes, Jose Donoso, Mario Vargas Llosa, Catalina de Erauso, Juana Manuela Gorriti, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, Gaspar de Villarroel, Jorge Luis Borges, Cristina Peri Rossi, and many others. 481 pages. On the 4th of December they planted the symbol of Christianity on the most elevated point close to where now stands the castle or fortification of the National Government, that is, on the southern portion of what forms the mouth of the said harbor; on account of that being a spot upon which no Spaniard or Christian had yet trod, according to the narrative of Father Palou. That cross I saw myself, in the year 1829, having come to San Francisco on business pertaining to the military service. No location was at that time made, either for a garrison (Presidio) or Mission, as the severity of the winter months compelled the expedition to return to winter quarters at Monterey; and they verified it by going over the route that was taken by the expedition of 1769, which was by San Pedro, and Spanishtown, (Half Moon Bay), in the county of San Mateo, Point New Year, Santa Cruz City, Watsonville in Santa Cruz county, Pajaro City, Castroville, Salinas, and Monterey, which had been their starting point. In the year 1775, during the months of August and September, Captain Ayala entered the Bay of San Francisco, on board the packet-boat San Carlos, this being the first historically authenticated vessel that sailed into that bay. They first made the JSL First Division in 1977, only to be relegated the next season afterwards and would not return to the top flight until 2000, when they were first promoted to the rebranded J1. The club co-founded the Japanese second tier three times under its three names: JSL Second Division (1972), Japan Football League Division 1 (1992) and J. League Division 2 (1999). Item Description: University Press Of Kentucky, 1970. hardcover. 1st Edition. Lexington. 1970. University Press Of Kentucky. 1st American Edition. Very Good In Dustjacket That Is Slightly Faded Around The Edges. 117 pages. hardcover. 0813112117. Cover design by Jonathan Greene. Translated from the Portuguese by Albert I. Bagby Jr. original title: A Mao e a Luva. keywords: Literature Latin America Brazil Translated. inventory # 28418. FROM THE PUBLISHER - The later novels of Machado de Assis - notably DOM CASMURRO and ESAU AND JACOB - are well known in this country, but the earlier novels have never been translated. Here, in THE HAND AND THE GLOVE (the Brazilian master’s second novel), rendered in English for the first time by Albeit I. Baghy, Jr., readers will find a younger, gentler Assis, writing a romantic comedy that is yet permeated with the lively wit characteristic of his later works. The story is a simple one - of love lost and love found. Of love lost by Estêvão, amiable but vacillating, who is bemused by his own romantic posturing, and by Jorge, superficial and calculating. Of love found by Luis Alves, whose self-possession and determination seem destined to carry him far. The love of all three men is the proud and beautiful Guiomar, sure of her own heart but unsure, until faced by rival claims, of where to bestow it - a foreshadowing of Capitu, the intriguing heroine of DOM CASMURRO. ‘English-speaking readers,’ says Helen Caldwell in the Foreword, ‘who are already acquainted with Machado de Assis will welcome this latest addition to the translated novels. True, it is a period piece; but its quaintness is a charm to carry us back to the Rio de Janeiro of the 1850s - to vanished courtly elegance and attitudes. Now, we too can know what drew Assis back to this early tale, for THE HAND AND THE GLOVE recreates in English the elegant background, the charming heroine, the comedy, and the light-hearted ebullience of the Portuguese original. Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, often known as Machado de Assis, Machado, or Bruxo do Cosme Velho, (June 21, 1839, Rio de Janeiro-September 29, 1908, Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian novelist, poet and short-story writer. He is widely regarded as the most important writer of Brazilian literature. However, he did not gain widespread popularity outside Brazil in his own lifetime. Machado’s works had a great influence on Brazilian literary schools of the late 19th century and 20th century. José Saramago, Carlos Fuentes, Susan Sontag and Harold Bloom are among his admirers and Bloom calls him ‘the supreme black literary artist to date.’ Son of Francisco José de Assis (a mulatto housepainter, descendent of freed slaves) and Maria Leopoldina Machado de Assis (a Portuguese washerwoman), Machado de Assis lost both his mother and his only sister at an early age. Machado is said to have learned to write by himself, and he used to take classes for free will. He learned to speak French first and English later, both fluently. He started to work for newspapers in Rio de Janeiro, where he published his first works and met established writers such as Joaquim Manuel de Macedo. Machado de Assis married Carolina Xavier de Novais, a Portuguese descendant of a noble family. Soon the writer got a public job and this stability permitted him to write his best works. Machado de Assis began by writing popular novels which sold well, much in the late style of José de Alencar. His style changed in the 1880s, and it is for the sceptical, ironic, comedic but ultimately pessimistic works he wrote after this that he is remembered: the first novel in his ‘new style’ was Epitaph for a Small Winner, known in the new Gregory Rabassa translation as The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas (a literal translation of the original title, Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas). In their brilliant comedy and ironic playfulness, these resemble in some ways the contemporary works of George Meredith in the United Kingdom, and Eça de Queirós in Portugal, but Machado de Assis’ work has a far bleaker emotional undertone. Excerpt: Ronaldo de Assis Moreira (born 21 March 1980 in Porto Alegre), commonly known as Ronaldinho (Brazilian Portuguese: ) or Ronaldinho Gaúcho, is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Flamengo and the Brazilian national team. He is a two-time winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year, awarded to the best player over the year. He won the award in both 2004 and 2005. 'Ronaldinho,' the diminutive and term of endearment for 'Ronaldo,' is accompanied in Brazilian usage by the nickname 'Gaúcho,' in order to distinguish him from fellow footballer and countryman Ronaldo, who was known as 'Ronaldinho' in Brazil beforehand. Ronaldo simply went by his first name upon his move to Europe, thereby allowing Ronaldinho to drop the 'Gaúcho' and go by the name Ronaldinho abroad. Prior to his move to Flamengo, he played for Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona and Milan. With the Spanish club, he won his first Champions League i. 104 pp. Englisch. Item Description: Quer-Kl.-Folio (205 x 287 mm). [4] Bl., 124 (recte 126) S., [2] Bl. Flexibler Pergamentband d. Jhs. (1997); P. Murphy, J. de Torre's Treatise of 1736 General Rules for Accompanying on the Organ (2000). Important revised and enlarged second edition, with an added fourth treatise to explain the method for accompanying in the Italian style, and expanded instructions and with the first use in Spain of two-stave keyboard notation. The text of the first three tratados essentially reproduces that presented in the first edition of 1702, although the wide, two-column format contrasts with the narrow one-column format of the editio princeps. Many of the first edition's numerous short chapters are grouped together and treated under subheadings of larger chapters that comprises several pages here. All of the scored examples from the first edition are rewritten, typographically, in keyboard notation, i.e., one note for the left hand is written in the bass clef and three notes for the right hand are written in either the soprano or the treble clef, with both staves connected by a brace. Although instruction in the art of deriving an accompaniment from a bass line appeared in Spain long before Torres's treatise with works such as Juan Carlos Amat's Guitarra española (Lérida, 1626), in which arabic numerals are used as chord symbols, and Gaspar Sanz' Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española (Zaragoza, 1674), in which the realizations are notated in guitar tablature, Reglas generales enjoys the significant distinction of being the first work in Spain to deal specifically and completely with thoroughbass accompaniment at the keyboard. Because of its emphasis on keyboard accompaniment and what Torres describes as the "rigorous Spanish style," this treatise, unlike any that had appeared before it in Spain, approaches thoroughbass from a contrapuntal as well as a harmonic perspective; this is a perspective that, unlike the guitar treatises of the same period, considers chord inversion and voice leading in the realization of the bass. It is also the approach shared by most of the influential eighteenth-century thoroughbass treatises from Italy, France, and Germany. Torres can be considered to be among the most modern of the early the eighteenth-century theorists of Spain, and can also be included in the larger body of E. Bookseller Inventory # B238776
