Item Description: Jonathan Cape, London, 1926. Cloth. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ivan Andreyevich Krylov (February 13, 1769 - November 21, 1844) is Russia's best known fabulist. While many of his earlier fables were loosely based on Aesop and Jean de La Fontaine, later fables were original work. Ivan Krylov was born in Moscow, but spent his early years in Orenburg and Tver. His father, a distinguished military officer, died in 1779, leaving the family destitute. A few years later Krylov and his mother moved to St.Petersburg in the hope of securing a government pension. There, Krylov obtained a position in the civil service, but gave it up after his mother's death in 1788. His literary career began already in 1783, when he sold a comedy he had written to a publisher. He used the proceeds to obtain the works of Molière, Racine, and Boileau. It was probably under the influence of these writers that he produced Philomela, which gave him access to the dramatic circle of Knyazhnin. Rebound in strong library binding. Ex-Library. Item Description: Grech Skt. Peterburg, 1824. Twelve issues (XXVII to XXXVIII) in two part (No. 95-96) in one volume 8vo (20 x 12.6 cm). 335 incl. title, [1, table of contents]; 288 pp.; very occasional light spotting. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, flat spine lettered in gilt; a bit rubbed at extremities. First publication of Krylov's fable, reviewed and corrected by Krylov himself, in an influential periodical: a fresh example. It is on pp. 33-35, with the following note: "this fable was printed in the No 7 of 'Sorevnovatel prosvesheniya' of this year, with lacks and mistakes. It is found here, following the wish of the author, with corrections". Krylov (1769–1844) is Russia's best known fabulist. While many of his earlier fables were loosely based on Aesop's and La Fontaine's, later fables were original work, often satirizing the incompetent bureaucracy that was stifling social progress in his time. 'Syn otechestva' was established by Grech in St. Petersburg in September 1812. Defending liberal views in its first decade, it became a leading intellectual and indeed very influential magazine of the Golden Age, until its end 40 years later. Next to other wide-ranging works and news, these issues are also devoted to the latest sensational scientific discovery of the time: the deciphering by the French scholar Jean-Francois Champollion (1790 - 1832) of hieroglyphic writing from Ancient Egypt. The transcript of the Rosetta Stone, published in 1822, was indeed a significant breakthrough. A more detailed work on the system of the Egyptian writing was later published in 1824 in Champollion's most comprehensive work, 'Precis du systeme hieroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens'. Item Description: St Petersburg, Iu. A. Iungmeister, 1847. 3 vols., 8vo; with half-titles, lithograph frontispiece in each volume; a very good copy in a Russian contemporary romantique binding of green polished roan in imitation of straight-grain morocco, spines chipped in places, lettering a little dulled, but a very good set.First collected edition of Krylov's work, and the best collected edition printed in the 19th century. It includes the first printing in book form of one of the earliest substantial biographies of Krylov, and the first appearance of the earliest datable portrait of Krylov (by A. I Volkov, frontispiece to volume 1). The first volume comprises the author's prose works; the second his poetical works, including 197 fables with an alphabetical index; and the third his dramatic works. The frontispiece to volume 2 reproduces the Krylov Jubilee medal of 1838, and that to volume 3 shows two examples of Krylov's handwriting. The editor and biographer Petr Aleksandrovich Pletnev (1792–1865), rector of the University of St Petersburg, was a friend of Krylov and also of Pushkin, whose collected works he had played a major role in editing in 1838. He was also the author of literary portraits of other contemporaries, among them Baratynsky and Zhukovsky. His biography here, which runs to 100 pages, had appeared in an earlier version in the periodical Sovremennik in 1845, and was subsequently reprinted in numerous editions of Krylov's Fables in the 19th and early 20th centuries.'After Krylov's death in 1844, the rights to his works were acquired by the publishers Jungmeister and Weimar In the years that Pletnyov was preparing his descriptive material for the press, the systematic editing of Krylov's works – what was in print, but particularly the manuscripts – had hardly begun and was only completed much later. The editor nevertheless undertook to produce a proper scholarly edition of the works of Krylov. However, the strict censorship conditions imposed by Nicholas I made this almost impossible' (Smirnov-Sokol'skii), and certain pieces were not included.Smirnov-Sokol'skii 798.
