The twelve insightful essays that constitute this volume not only shed new light on the old classics like Untouchable Coolie Two leaves and a bud and The Old woman and the cow but also deals with issues like despair and delight in the novels of Mulk Raj Anand the identity crisis Anand's creative exploitation of the linguistic resources of the English language his narrative technique his humanism his treatment of individuals as social constructs the symbiotic relationship between art and culture studies and other unexplored facets of Anand's writings. The detailed bibliography at the end serves as a useful research tool for the scholars studying Anand. The students of Indian English literature would find this book immensely useful and also those who keep interest in the writings of Anand would find the essays quite thought provoking and illuminating. 172 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 54903

Epilogue Invitation to a dialogue what work does Fieldwork do in the field of elections/Yogendra Yadav. Index. The Grassroots of Democracy conceived by India's most influential modern anthropologist M.N. Srinivas and his eminent colleague A.M. Shah who has also edited it this book contains essays based on field studies of two national elections in India's rural tribal and urban communities within ten Indian states. The studies were conducted by sixteen sociologists at the Delhi School of Economics under the direction of Srinivas and Shah. Demonstrating the importance of fieldwork for studying elections (as compared to the questionnaire and interview method) this book provides a novel perspective on elections very different from the usual interpretation of statistics. Here the sociologist's micro view contrasts with the macro view of political scientists journalists and psephologists. The book is contextualised by an epilogue from the distinguished political scientist Yogendra Yadav. Among the many reasons for the importance of this book as a departure in electoral studies is the thorough going manner in which it questions the general assumption of the rational individual as the sole arbiter of voting behaviour. It analyses the role of social factors in electoral processes and delineates the continuity between local regional and national politics. In so doing it reveals how Indian democracy actually operates. With its diverse narratives and Jargon free descriptions this book will be accessible to non specialists interested in political and social processes during the drama filled times when India goes to the polls. It will greatly interest anthropologists journalists and psephologists. 380 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 63121

Item Description: Oxford University Press, New Delhi, India, 2009. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Revised Edition. In today’s complex and fast evolving environment, understanding India’s economy is not just an intellectual challenge, but, with the country emerging as a major global player, also a requirement. This unique volume, the first comprehensive resource of its kind on the contemporary Indian economy, aims to address this need. Culled from the collective wisdom and experience of over 200 distinguished contributors, that include economists, business leaders, policymakers, and analysts, the Companion covers the evolution of the Indian economy from relative obscurity to an emergent global force. The more than 200 entries span the recent cover stories of India’s high growth, leadership in software and information technology, and outsourcing success, and also document the backwaters—the widespread poverty, farmer suicides, child labour, and the large and impoverished informal sector that houses a majority of India’s labour force. The revised edition, a testimonial to the dynamism that epitomizes ‘the Indian economy’, includes several new topics that have grown in significance since the first edition was planned; and several revised entries on topics that have undergone rapid transformation during the short time since the first edition was written. Index. Like many other developing countries India has evolved from precapitalist form into a mixed economy. The programmes of large scale industrialisation adopted by the government ever since the beginning of the second Five Year Plan have helped the economy in coming out of the low level equilibrium trap and introduced many significant structural changes. The industrial sector was plagued by stagnation and retrogression for full two decades i.e. form 1965 to 85 the industrial licensing policy failed in achieving its objectives the public sector has failed to utilise its resources properly leading to substantial under utilization of capacity and colossed wastage of resources etc. In the light of these issues the government of India launched the New Industrial Policy 1991. One of the thrust areas of the policy is disinvestment. The present policy of disinvesting is initially in small fractions in public enterprises and joint venture to meet the budgetary deficit and for rechannalisation into new industrial activities it is like selling the family silver to have a good time. The main purpose of this edited volume is to stimulate readers to gain an insight into the problems of the disinvestment management and suggestions. 264 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 60763
