The large folding map of Morocco, with abundant topographical detail, is dated 1795.William Lempriere (1751-1834) was the son of Thomas Lempriere of Jersey, British Consul at Faro, and Mary Garnaut of Lisbon. A short time after he joined the garrison of Gibraltar as surgeon's mate in 1789, the sultan of Morocco wrote General O'Hara requesting that an English doctor be sent to cure the sultan's son, who was going blind. At the promise of a liberal reward and the release of ten shipwrecked British sailors, Lempriere undertook the 600-mile journey. When the prince's health improved, however, his father the sultan sent him on pilgrimage to Mecca (Chapter X), and simply ignored Lempriere's requests for permission to return to Gibraltar. Only after the sultan's favorite wife was poisoned was Lempriere allowed to leave, on the pretense that he would fetch an antidote. He returned to Gibraltar in early 1790, and published his account of his adventures soon after.---- Innocêncio V, 446; XVI, 225. Palau 134871. Gonçalves Rodrigues, @A tradução em Portugal 2051. Cf. In very good condition. Numbered "196" in red pencil in blank margin of title-page. ---- Apparently the First Edition in Portuguese, including significant annotations by the translator, of Bell's @A Treatise on the Theory and Management of Ulcers, Edinburgh, 1778, which was an important classification of ulcers, including those caused by venereal disease and herpes (pp. 230-45 and 207-30), and by cancer, impetigo and scurvy. The introductory section is on inflammation, a frequent occurrence with ulcers or sores; the engraved plate shows the tools and procedure for treating an inflamed knee. Although best known for his work on venereal diseases (he was the first to distinguish between gonorrhea and syphilis), Bell made his greatest contributions in the field of surgery, producing a six-volume work on that subject. The translator, Manuel Joaquim Henriques de Paiva (b. 1752 in Castello Branco, Portugal; d. 1829 in Bahia), was one of the foremost physicians of his time. He exercised considerable influence on Brazilian and Portuguese medicine, particularly by his activities as a promulgator of foreign medical doctrines. He translated numerous medical works into Portuguese and was one of the first to introduce the ideas of John Brown to Portugal and Brazil, mainly through translations of Brera and Weikard. Exiled from Portugal for being sympathetic to Junot, he spent most of the last 20 years of his life in Bahia, as a professor at the Academia Medico-Cirurgica. Item Description: Lisbon, Na Off. de Simão Thaddeo Ferreira, 1793., 1793. Very small typographical vignette on title page. Typographical headpiece on p. 1. vi pp., (1 blank l.), 310 pp., (1 blank l.). 8°, twentieth-century (third quarter) antique sheep (wear to outer joints), spine with raised bands in five compartments, crimson leather lettering piece in second compartment from head, gilt author and short title, other compartments decorated in blind, gilt fillets. Occasional minor marginal soiling. Uncut and unopened. Overall in very good condition. ---- First edition in Portuguese of this biography of the Austrian field marshal Gideon Ernst, Freiherr von Laudon (1717-1790), one of Frederick the Great of Prussia's greatest military opponents; it was translated from the Spanish, which was in turn translated from Italian. Born in then Swedish Livonia, which after the Great Northern War had been ceded to Russia according to the 1721 Treaty of Nystad, he was sent to the Imperial Russian Army as a cadet in 1732. During the War of the Polish Succession he took part in the 1734 Siege of Danzig led by Field Marshal Burkhard Christoph von Münnich, he marched against French troops up to the Rhine in 1735 and back to the Dnieper River into the Turkish campaign. Dissatisfied with his prospects and the conditions in the Russian Army, Laudon finally resigned in 1741 and sought military employment elsewhere. At Vienna he was made a captain in the @Freikorps of Franz von der Trenck, and fought in the War of the Austrian Succession. His next active service, still under Trenck, was in the Silesian mountains in 1745, greatly distinguishing himself as a leader of light troops. He was present also at the Battle of Soor. Having reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel at the outbreak of the Seven Years' War, he was promoted colonel at the behest of Chancellor Wenzel Anton Kaunitz and distinguished himself repeatedly. In 1757 he fought in Bohemia and Saxony under Field Marshal Maximilian Ulysses Browne and became a @Generalfeldwachtmeister (major-general of cavalry) as well as a knight of the newly founded Maria Theresa Military Order. This was followed by other brilliant actions, and additional honors, including being created a Baron the Austrian nobility as well as that of the Holy Roman Empire. He fought in the War of the Bavarian Succession, and finally in the Austro-Turkish War of 1787-1791, where though old and broken in health, Laudon was commander-in-chief in fact as well as in name, and in 1789 he won a last brilliant success by capturing Belgrade in three weeks. The Portuguese translator notes that two Spanish translations were published in Madrid, 1790, one of which was severely abridged. Figueiredo used the other, adding footnotes and supplementary documents. Becattini was a prolific and controversial Italian journalist, writer and polemicist, many of whose works of biography and contemporary history were published under false imprints. He is perhaps best known for a history of the Inquisition.---- Innocêncio V, 431. Gonçalves Rodrigues, @A tradução em Portugal 2003. Item Description: Lisbon, Offic. da Casa Litteraria do Arco do Cego, 1800., 1800. 103 pp. Facing pages in Latin and Portuguese. 4°, contemporary marbled wrappers. In fine condition. Stamp in blank portion of Portuguese title-page of D. Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil ("Bibliotecas de S. Magestade Imperial e Real"). ---- Second edition of this poem in Latin (the first also appeared in 1800 from the Arco do Cego press), and first with the Portuguese translation by the well known Arcadian poet Barbosa du Bocage, a friend of the author. It describes the exploits of the Portuguese during their expedition to Tripoli. Cardoso, a native of Bahia, taught Latin there. The Arco do Cego press (officially the Tipografia Chalcografica, Tipoplastica e Literaria, located in Lisbon at the Arco do Cego), was established in 1800 at the insistence of D. Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho, Minister of State, who realized the need to spread information on new techniques in the arts, industry and agriculture in Portugal and Brazil. He proposed to do this by publishing Portuguese translations of recent foreign works on those subjects. The director of the press was José Mariano da Conceição Veloso (1742?-1811), a native of Minas Geraes and a noted botanist; he was assisted by many young Brazilians living in Lisbon. The Arco do Cego was well equipped, with its own foundry for making type, its own presses and its own designers and engravers, two of whom?Romão Eloy and Ferreira Souto?later introduced the art of engraving to Brazil. After producing a relatively large number of works, it was incorporated in 1801 into the Regia Oficina Typografica, later known as the Impressão Regia and then the Imprensa Nacional.---- Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 151-2; @Período colonial p. 82. Item Description: Lisbon, Na Officina de Domingos Rodrigues, 1749., 1749. Small typographical vignette on title page. Woodcut headpieces, initial, and factotum initials. (4 ll.), 100 pp. 7 works in 1 volume. 4°, nineteenth-century tree sheep (some wear, especially to corners), flat spine gilt with red leather lettering piece, gilt letter and initials "M.V.D." near foot, marbled endleaves. Browning. Overall in good condition. Eight-line nineteenth-century ink manuscript note on verso of second front free endleaf, commenting on the authorship of D. Maria de Lara e Menezes and the cost of the work. 7 works in 1 volume. ---- These poems probably appeared in print for the first time in 1716, under the title "Sentimentos de D. Pedro e de D. Ignes de Castro," in volume I of the @Fenix renascida. Their author, D. Maria de Lara e Menezes (1610-1649), daughter of the Duque de Caminha, was the wife of D. Duarte de Bragança, brother of D. João IV. The story of D. Inez de Castro has inspired poems, dramas, and operas. In 1340, the beautiful D. Inez came to Portugal as lady-in-waiting to the Infanta of Spain, Constanza, who was betrothed to D. Pedro, future king of Portugal. D. Pedro gave his hand to the Infanta but his heart to D. Inez. After the Infanta died, D. Pedro and D. Inez were married morganatically. But intrigues surrounded them: Portuguese nobles whispered that D. Inez wanted to bring her own friends to Court, and even wanted to have her eldest son succeed D. Affonso IV, rather than the legitimate heir. In 1355 D. Inez was assassinated. D. Pedro swore to make amends, and when he acceded to the throne two years later, he punished her tormentors, insisted that the Church recognize his marriage, and had D. Inez?s body exhumed and reburied with royal honors at Alcobaça.---- Innocêncio VI, 139-40 refers to an edition of Lisbon: Offic. Joaquiniana da Musica, 1744; XVI, 357-8 mentions an edition by the same publisher, 1745, and refers to the present edition, claiming in error that it was merely the 1745 edition with a new title page; see also V, 370-1.
