Nella primavera del 1971 il mondo conosce il Caso Padilla, una grande farsa montata dalle autorità culturali cubane che ricorda i processi sovietici, durante i quali gli intellettuali di prestigio, principalmente poeti e scrittori, venivano costretti a ritrattare le loro opere in una sorta di autocritica pubblica. Il Caso Padilla è la prima ferita aperta della Rivoluzione Cubana e la prima vera crisi attraversata dal "paradiso comunista". Le opinioni internazionali sul Caso Padilla si dividono. Il caso Padilla provoca una rottura tra gli intellettuali della sinistra mondiale e la Cuba castrista. Ci sono proteste e pressioni da parte di intellettuali come Jean-Paul Sarte, Carlos Fuente e Mario Vargas Llosa. Padilla chiede a Castro il permesso di lasciare il paese, ma gli viene negato. È soltanto grazie alla pressione di Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Alberto Moravia, Mario Vargas Llosa, che, nel 1980, Padilla viene liberato e autorizzato a lasciare il paese. In questo stesso anno conclude il romanzo En mi jardín pastan los heroes, che viene tradotto in sette lingue, persino in italiano (Nel mio giardino pascolano gli eroi, Mondadori - purtroppo fuori catalogo). C'era appena stato il boom economico, l'Italia cominciava a parigliarsi con la televisione, e già spuntavano gli opinion-maker: Moravia, Parise, Pasolini. La via scelta da un giovane bresciano laureatosi con Mario Dal Pra fu di approfondire il senso, o i sensi, di quella parola tornando al luogo da cui era sorta: il lascito di Jean-Jacques Rousseau alla gioventù tedesca. Fu così che Luciano Parinetto già da subito intuì la parentela stretta tra alienazione e utopia, come termini speculari e immediatamente richiamantisi. Questo libro presenta il materiale riordinato di un seminario tenuto alla Statale di Milano nell'anno accademico 1966-67. Marx vi è visto come il coronamento di un'avventura collettiva dello spirito, e al contempo come il suo esecutore testamentario. Di lì a poco, col Sessantotto, il marxismo avrebbe preso altre vie, già del resto abbozzate un lustro prima: scienza empirica avversa ad ogni spinta utopica con l'operaismo, ideologia terribilmente compatta e chiusa col maoismo. Fatto sta che nel giro di pochi anni il concetto di alienazione finì in soffitta, per restarvi. E riproporlo ora con Parinetto potrebbe sembrare addirittura fuori luogo (utopico?), non fosse per il sospetto che, come la lettera rubata di Poe, il suo oggetto è invisibile per troppa presenza.
