Item Description: Counterpoint, 2010. Book Condition: Used. This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 100% Guaranteed. Summary: In this mesmerizing debut novel, Michael Sledge creates an intimate portrait of the beloved poet Elizabeth Bishop -- of her life in Brazil and her relationship with her lover, the dazzling, aristocratic Lota de Macedo Soares. Sledge artfully draws from Bishop's lifelong correspondences and biography to imagine the poet's intensely private world, revealing the literary genius who lived in conflict with herself both as a writer and as a woman. A seemingly idyllic existence in Soares's glass house in the jungle gives way to the truth of Bishop's lifelong battle with alcoholism, as well as her eventual status as one of modernism's most prominent writers. Though connected to many of the most famous cultural and political figures of the era, Soares too is haunted by her own demons. As their secrets unfold, the sensuous landscape of Rio de Janeiro, the rhythms of the samba and the bossa nova, and the political turmoil of 1950s Brazil envelop Bishop in a world she never expected to inhabit. The More I Owe You is a vivid portrait of two brilliant women whose love for one another pushes them to accomplish enduring works of art. Bookseller Inventory # ABE_book_usedgood_1582435766

Item Description: Basic Books, 2006. Book Condition: Used. This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 100% Guaranteed. Summary: What gave Christopher Columbus the confidence in 1492 to set out across the Atlantic Ocean? What persuaded the king and queen of Spain to commission the voyage? It would be convenient to believe that Columbus and his men were uniquely courageous. A more reasonable explanation, however, is that Columbus was heir to a body of knowledge about seas and ships acquired at great cost over many centuries. Fish on Friday tells a new story of the discovery of America. In Brian Fagan's view, that discovery is the product of the long sweep of history: the spread of Christianity and the radical cultural changes it brought to Europe, the interaction of economic necessity with a changing climate, and generations of unknown fishermen who explored the North Atlantic in the centuries before Columbus. The Church's tradition of not eating meats on holy days created a vast market for fish that could not be fully satisfied by fish farms, better boats, or new preservation techniques. Then, when climate change in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries diminished fish stocks off Norway and Iceland, fishermen were forced to range ever farther to the west - eventually discovering incredibly rich shoals within sight of the Nova Scotia coast. In Ireland in 1490, Columbus could well have heard about this unknown land. The rest is history. Bookseller Inventory # ABE_book_usedgood_0465022847

Item Description: Oxford University Press, 2009. Book Condition: Used. This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 100% Guaranteed. Summary: "Gribben provides rich analytical context in this compelling and a much-needed historical look at prophecy fiction. Writing the Rapture brings both the popular and trans-Atlantic side of the history of dispensationalism to life."--Amy Frykholm, author of Rapture Culture: Left Behind in Evangelical America "Crawford Gribben has accomplished an unusual feat in this fine book: he has shown why apparently "ephemeral" literature should be taken seriously and why doing so allows for very serious reflection on American religious history in general. Gribben, from Ireland, has written wisely and well on a profoundly American phenomenon." --Mark Noll, Professor of History, University of Notre Dame "How have novels depicting the end times become so popular in contemporary America? Crawford Gribben analyses the process, carefully and sympathetically, in terms of the changing evangelical perceptions of the twentieth century." --David Bebbington, Professor of History, University of Stirling. "Gribben's book is a must-read for any scholar interested in prophecy fiction specifically and twentieth and twenty-first-century Protestant fiction more generally. .This book will become a standard work for all interested in more contemporary Protestant publishing. Religious and cultural historians, as well as literary critics, will find great rewards nestled on almost every page of his work." --American Historical Review "Gribben's study is commendable for its clear descriptions of the early development and later phenomenal success of fictional depictions of the rapture. It undertakes the complicated task of placing the novels against the backdrop of American evangelical and fundamentalist traditions, maintaining a balance of perspectives throughout."--H-Pentecostalism: H-Net Reviews "The most comprehensive and informative examination to date of 'prophecy fiction'. Writing the Rapture is a must read for anyone with a scholarly interest in prophecy fiction, with the evolution of dispensationalism, or with the history of American evangelicalism." --Nova Religio. Item Description: Basic Books, 2007. Book Condition: New. Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: What gave Christopher Columbus the confidence in 1492 to set out across the Atlantic Ocean? What persuaded the kingand queen of Spain to commission the voyage? It would be convenient to believe that Columbus and his men were uniquely courageous. A more reasonable explanation, however, is that Columbus was heir to a body of knowledge about seas and ships acquired at great cost over many centuries. Fish on Fridaytells a new story of the discovery of America. In Ireland in 1490, Columbus could wellhave heard about this unknown land. The rest is history. Bookseller Inventory # ABE_book_new_0465022855

Item Description: University Press of Mississippi, 1992. Book Condition: Used. This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 100% Guaranteed. Summary: This book is the first to examine comprehensively the demographic growth, cultural evolution, and political involvement of Louisiana's large Acadian community between the time of the Louisiana Purchase (1803), when the transplanted culture began to take on a decidedly Louisiana character, and 1877, the end of Reconstruction in Louisiana, when traditional distinctions between Acadians and neighboring groups had ceased to be valid. Serving as a model for ethnohistories of other nonliterate peoples, Acadian to Cajun reveals how authentic cultural history can be derived from alternative historical resources when primary materials such as newspapers, correspondence, and diaries are not available. Here, Carl A. Brasseaux assembles a composite picture of this large Cajun community. From civil records, federal census reports, ecclesiastical registers, legislative acts, and electoral returns, he reveals the astonishing cultural transformation of the Acadians of Nova Scotia into the Cajuns of Louisiana.
