Book Description: Hutchinson. Book Condition: Very Good. . Hardcover. Hutchinson, 1991, 1st UK edn. with dust cover, in mint condition; black cloth; x+435pp, What are women's sexual fantasies? Feminism took women out of the kitchen, gave them a sexual life and set them on the path towards the millennium. In the early seventies Cosmopolitan and Nova instructed women to buy vibrators and 'nice' girls were officially allowed to do it - the orgasm became respectable. What has happened since those exciting and impassioned days? Two decades on, in a world wallpapered by sexual images and dominated by Madonna look-alikes, women's sexual independence is under threat, our daughters are more sexually confused than ever and the threat of AIDS overshadows the future. Author of the ground-breaking bestsellers My Secret Garden, My Mother/My Self and Men in Love, Nancy Friday raises another banner for women's sexual liberation and asks: what are women's fantasies today? What can we learn from them? The answers uncovered in the material she collected for Women on Top are provoking, shocking, sometimes iconoclastic, always richly revealing. Our fantasies, she writes, are the X-rays of our sexual souls, vital clues to what makes us female, to our interior life. We sweep them under the carpet at our peril. Sent in by women of all ages and conditions, the fantasies represent a lexicon of erotic fantasy ? angry, lustful, tender, dark, guilt-ridden and powerful. Characteristically courageous and provoking, Nancy Friday charts the collective feminine imagination and, without a doubt, Women on Top will be seen as an important milestone in feminism, in our erotic liberation and in the tracing of the cultural profile of the 1990s. 9½x6¼". . . . . Book Description: Michael Glazier Inc, United States, 2010. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 226 x 137 mm. Brand New Book. Human beings are embedded in a set of social relations. A social network is one way of conceiving that set of relations in terms of a number of persons connected to one another by varying degrees of relatedness. In the early Jesus group documents featuring Paul and coworkers, it takes little effort to envision the apostle s collection of friends and friends of friends that is the Pauline network. The persons who constituted that network are the focus of this set of brief books. For Christians of the Western tradition, these persons are significant ancestors in faith. While each of them is worth knowing by themselves, it is largely because of their standing within that web of social relations woven about and around Paul that they are of lasting interest. Through this series we hope to come to know those persons in ways befitting their first-century Mediterranean culture.Imagine trying to find a window into the life of an individual who lived approximately two thousand years ago in a culture vastly different from our own. Consider the added difficulty when that individual is a woman and the only written record of her consists of two biblical verses (Rom 16:1-2). In this volume Joan C. Campbell takes on the challenge and provides a surprisingly full and rich account of Phoebe of Kenchreai. With Campbell, we visit Phoebe s hometown, we wander the city streets with her, and we meet her associates. Along the way, we gain insight into the social roles that Paul ascribes to her (sister, deacon, and patron) and what these roles entailed in first-century Mediterranean Jesus groups. This book is important reading for anyone interested in the contribution of women to emerging Christianity and for contemporary deacons who seek to understand the biblical roots of their ministry. Joan C. Campbell, CSM, PhD, is a member of the Congregation of Saint Martha of Prince Edward Island, Canada, and assistant professor of New Testament Studies at Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A major teaching and research interest of hers is the cultural world of first-century Mediterranean Jesus groups and how knowledge of that cultural world can illumine biblical texts that deal with women such as Phoebe. She is the author of Kinship Relations in the Gospel of John. Bookseller Inventory # AAC9780814652817

Book Description: Pantheon Books, 1993. hardcover. 1st Edition. New York. 1993. Pantheon Books. 1st American Edition. Small Stain Mark On Front Free Endpaper, Otherwise Very Good In Dustjacket. 165 pages. February 1993. hardcover. Jacket photograph by Benno Friedman. Jacket design by Marjorie Anderson. Translated from the Portuguese by Peter Bush. keywords: Literature Translated Brazil Latin America. inventory # 25582. FROM THE PUBLISHER - A major literary event that has taken the international publishing community by storm: A best-seller in Brazil, where it received unprecedented critical acclaim, Turbulence has also been translated into French, German, Italian, and Spanish, among other major languages. Written by Chico Buarque, one of Brazil’s premier singers and songwriters, the novel gives an intense, apocalyptic vision of the paranoia, lawlessness, and nightmare of urban life in Brazil-an extended metaphor for a country facing the menace of a violent confrontation between the rich and the poor. Set in the decaying and poverty-stricken outskirts of an unnamed city, TURBULENCE consists of a series of highly charged cinematic scenes, viewed through the dazed eyes of a nameless narrator who moves between two different worlds. An aimless dropout, living on handouts from his rich sister, he belongs by birth to the privileged urban upper crust, with its luxury seaside apartments, its fabulous houses hidden behind electrified high walls and protected by machine-gun-toting security guards, its insanely expensive boutiques and shopping centers, its extravagant parties and trips to Europe. By chance he enters the ‘other Brazil,’ the world of marginal and petty criminals that infringes on the edges of privileged society and threatens to engulf it. Told with compelling urgency, rich in irony, alive with arresting imagery, TURBULENCE is a haunting novel of kidnapping, assault and robbery, rape, and murder. Chico Buarque was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1944. He is internationally renowned as a singer, composer, and avant-garde dramatist. TURBULENCE is his first novel. Francisco Buarque de Hollanda (born June 19, 1944 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), popularly known as Chico Buarque is a singer, guitarist, composer, dramatist, writer and poet. He is best known for his music, which often includes social, economic and cultural commentary on Brazil and Rio de Janeiro in particular. Son of the academic Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Buarque lived in several locations throughout his childhood, though mostly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Italy. He wrote and studied literature as a child and came to music through the bossa nova compositions of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He performed music throughout the 1960s as well as writing a play that was deemed dangerous by the Brazilian military dictatorship of the time. Buarque, along with several of his fellow musicians, were threatened by the government and eventually left Brazil in 1970. He moved to Italy again. However, he came back to Brazil in 1971, one year before the others, and continued to record albums, perform, and write, though much of his material was not allowed by government censors. He released several more albums in the 1980s and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s, all of which were acclaimed critically. Small Stain Mark On Front Free Endpaper, Otherwise Very Good In Dustjacket. Bookseller Inventory # 25582
