Excerpt: Sri Aurobindo (Bengali: Sri Ôrobindo) (born Aurobindo Ghose; 15 August 1872 - 5 December 1950) was an Indian nationalist, freedom fighter, philosopher, yogi, guru, and poet. He joined the Indian movement for freedom from British rule and for a duration became one of its most important leaders, before developing his own vision of human progress and spiritual evolution. The central theme of Sri Aurobindo's vision is the evolution of human life into life divine. Writes he:'Man is a transitional being. He is not final. The step from man to superman is the next approaching achievement in the earth evolution. It is inevitable because it is at once the intention of the inner spirit and the logic of nature's process.' Sri Aurobindo synthesized Eastern and Western philosophy, religion, literature, and psychology in writings. Aurobindo was the first Indian to create a major literary corpus in English. His works include philosophy; poetry; translations of and commentaries on the Vedas, Upanishads, and the Gita; plays; literary, social, political, and historical criticism; devotional works; spiritual journals and three volumes of letters. His principal philosophical writings are The Life Divine and The Synthesis of Yoga, while his principal poetic work is Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol. Sri Aurobindo was born into a kayastha family in Calcutta, India. His father, Dr. Krishna Dhan Ghose, was District Surgeon of Rangapur, Bengal. His mother, Swarnalata Devi, was the daughter of Brahmo religious and social reformer, Rajnarayan Basu. Dr. Ghose chose the middle name Akroyd to honour his friend Annette Akroyd. Aurobindo spent his first five years at Rangapur, where his father had been posted since October 1871. Dr. Ghose, who had previously lived in Britain and studied medicine at King's College, Aberdeen, was determined that his children should have an English education and upbringing free of any Indian influences. In 1877, he therefore sent the young Aurobindo and two elder sibling 40 pp. Englisch. Bookseller Inventory # 9781155700076

Consumer Movement started from the US and later spread to other European countries such as UK The Netherlands Norway Ireland Germany and France. Subsequently it spread to the Asian countries including Japan India and Malaysia. With the advent of competition in the market the movement gained momentum to emerge as a powerful weapon in the hands of consumers. Nevertheless consumers especially in the developing countries still need protection because they are disorganized and individually they have a very weak bargaining power. Many of them are illiterate ignorant and usually lack information to make intelligent purchases. Often they are not in a position to protect their interests while dealing with fully organized united and well informed professional sellers. Historically consumers in India remained as highly neglected and ill treated lots because markets for most essential products and services were sellers markets allowing the manufacturers and traders to keep their one up position vis a vis buyers. The plethora of Consumer Protection Laws has turned out to be a close preserve of the bureaucracy. The legal armory in this regard consists of about thirty laws meant for protecting the consumer directly or indirectly besides the statutory orders that can be enforced under the rule making power of the government at all levels. Yet the kind of protection the gullible consumer is in need of is illusive. This was precisely the reason which prompted us to organize a National Seminar on Consumer Movement in India Strategies for Peoples Involvement at the G.H. Patel Post graduate Institute of Business Management of the Sardar Patel University Vallabh Vidyanagar. The seminar was funded by the UGC under the Departmental Research Support (DRS) Scheme. The papers presented at the Seminar related to four themes 1. Consumer Rights Global v/s Indian Perspectives. 2. Violation of Consumer Rights and Remedial Measures under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). 3. Strategies for Creating Awareness and Peoples Involvement. 4. Other related issues (advertising ethics environment etc.). The book is a humble attempt to fill in the gap for good reference material on Consumer Movement in India and abroad. 224 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 66011

The biographies have not been arranged in any particular order. The present volume is the part II of the volume VII and includes the memoirs of 20 eminent plant pathologists including a few namely Butler Mundkur and Mehta who laid foundations of plant pathology in India. Most of the articles have been written by subject matter specialists who have been in close touch with the distinguished plant pathologists. But in certain cases only the published material formed the basis for the write up but even these have included personal anecdotes to indicate their intimate interest in the subject it teaching and students. This volume will inspire the young mind to chose plant pathology as a career and the old mind to go deeper in the subject and solve complex plant pathological problems to serve the society. 226 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 63047
