Fraught With A Background: Identity And Cultural Legacy In Sea Of Poppies/Bibhash Choudhury Notes on Contributors Index Indian Writing in English has proliferated over the last few decades and has made a huge impact on English readers. Not only do the works of Indian authors writing in English find a place on the best-seller list, they are also receiving critical acclaim across the world. Starting from Rabindranath Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, R.K. Narayan, Raja Rao, Mulk Raj Anand to V.S. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Vikram Seth and Amitav Ghosh, we have an array of writers adorning the literary horizon. All these writers have considerable following in the English speaking countries, and Amitav Ghosh certainly occupies an important place among them, and is much acclaimed for his literary style and content. One of the most prolific postcolonial writers writing today, Amitav Ghosh has received many awards: The Circle of Reason winning the Prix Medici Etranger (one of France s top literary award), The Shadow Lines winning the Sahitya Akademi Award, and The Calcutta Chromosome bagging the Arthur C. Clarke Award for 1997. His later novels, Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke and Flood of Fire showcasehis capacity for epic narration, with each of these texts in the Ibis series, exploring the layered dimensions of identity and cultural form. This book, in its second edition, continues to be an anthology of critical essays, and deals with fictional as well as non-fictional works of Amitav Ghosh. It focuses on Ghosh s idea and theory of the novel, postcolonial rationality in The Circle of Reason, nationalism in the context of Partition in The Shadow Lines, and the East-West encounter in The Calcutta Chromosome. Besides, it also discusses power structure operating within the narrative of The Glass Palace, and the question of space, identity and cultural difference in The Hungry Tide. Though different from each other, some of the essays take up common themes for discussion and offer new insights into Ghosh s works. New to this Edition This edition introduces critical analyses of Ghosh s three much talked-about books from Ibis Triology: Sea of Poppies (2008), River of Smoke(2011) and the most recent one Flood of Fire (2015). The essays examine the plots of the two novels highlighting the Opium culture being cultivated in India by the colonial powers. This book is meant for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of English literature. Besides, all those readers who wish to delve deeper into the works of Amitav Ghosh will find reading the text extremely informative, and useful.

The man the mistress the will the motifs in Mahesh Dattani's Where there is a Will. The origin of drama in India dates back to Christian era. The great sage Bharat says that once all Gods prayed to Brahma the Creator of the Universe to produce a thing of great entertainment possessed with the qualities of the visual and the auditory senses which can be enjoyed alike by all section of society. Brahma then took the nectar of all the four Vedas plot from the Rigveda music from the Sam Veda acting from the Yajurveda and rasas (human emotions) from the Atharva Veda and thus made the fifth Veda drama. Indian Drama in English is not a new thing but a link in the continuation of its rich heritage. The immortal works of Tagore and Aurobindo are steeped in poetry and romance recalling the spirit and flavour of the distinctive dramatic type exemplified in different ways of Bhasa Kalidasa and Bhavabhuti. The other playwrights whose works merit our attention much are Harindra Nath Chattopadhaya T.P. Kailasam Bharati Sarabhai P.A. Krishnaswami Asif Currimbhoy Pratap Sharma Nissim Ezekiel Girish Karnad Vijay Tendulkar Gopal Gandhi Mahesh Duttani Manjula Padmanabhan Mohan Rakesh Badal Sircar etc. Their exploration of the recess of human psychology their tireless efforts to highlight the status of the Dalit and the deserted their revolutionary attitude to expose the evils of society are some of the major things which can't be easily denied. The need of the day is to go to our past myths and traditions and to project the present in the light of the past with an eye to future. 197 pp.

The Fusing Horizons is a collection of critical essays by professors/academicians in Indian Universities on Indian writing in English. Literary concerns of contemporary interest have been refreshingly examined so as to provide a novelty in critiquing spontaneity in response and objectivity in insights. Indian writers from R.K. Narayan to the present are revisited and therefore the book encompasses and deliberates on a wide range of topics. The new perspectives from which writers and their works have been seen enhances a fusion of horizons in this hermeneutical tradition. Dedicated to the memory of Professor Dr. K.S. Ramamurti the essays seek to be insightful jargon free and pluralistic in their approach. Sociological archetypal religious and feminist issues have homogenized here into a refreshing experience. It is hoped that the book would be a rewarding study for students researchers and teachers alike and indeed a valuable possession for all lovers of Indian literature in English. 154 pp.

Lord Buddha preached his noble dharma on this blessed soil of India 2 500 years ago and we Indians profited by his teaching for more than 1 000 years and guided ourselves by it. And then came misfortunes and calamities and the darkness of night descended upon Buddhism. One of the primary reasons for the decline of Buddhism in the land of its birth was the Brahmanical opposition to the concept of equality of all human beings preached by the Buddha. The Brahmins went all out to defend the caste system in order to cling to their privileges which flowed from it. They on the one hand unleashed a propaganda of hatred against Buddhism persecuted the Buddhists and on the other hand they assimilated the good point of Buddhism into their system to win back the masses. Unlike their ancient ancestors who had resorted to vilification of the Buddha in strongest terms the modern Hindus have shown better understanding. Having realized that the Buddha was indeed the noblest and the greatest religious teacher ever born in India the modern Hindus have begun to honour the Buddha and also to write favourably about him. This book is the first of its kind in which the author presents and analyses the select writings and speeches on Buddha and Buddhism of prominent Hindu leaders and scholars who lived in the 20th century. 150 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. How do we define nationalism? Who is a good nationalist? Do you become anti-national if you criticize the government? These are questions that overwhelm most debates today, but these discussions are not new. And while the loudest voices would have us believe that Indian nationalism is (and has always been) a narrow, parochial, xenophobic one, our finest political leaders, thinkers, scientists and writers have been debating the concept since the early nineteenth century and come to a different conclusion. Nationalism as we understand it today first came into being more than a hundred years ago. Studied by historians, political scientists and sociologists for its role in world history, it remains one of the strongest driving forces in politics and also the most malleable one. A double-edged sword, it can be a binding force or a deeply divisive instrument used to cause strife around political, cultural, linguistic or, more importantly, religious identities. In this anthology, historian S. Irfan Habib traces the growth and development of nationalism in India from the late nineteenth century through its various stages: liberal, religion-centric, revolutionary, cosmopolitan, syncretic, eclectic, right liberal The views of our most important thinkers and leaders-Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, C. Rajajgopalachari, Bhagat Singh, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sarojini Naidu, B. R. Ambedkar, Rabindranath Tagore, M. N. Roy, Maulana Azad, Jayaprakash Narayan and others-remind us what nationalism should mean and the kind of inclusive, free and humanistic nation that we should continue to build.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 302 pages.Calcutta is a city in a state of permanent surprise , where amazement is around every crumbling corner, and astonishm ent lurks over every rickshaw-puller's shoulder. It is a city tha t never ceases to shock those who pass through, and it is also a city that manages to delight and enthrall those who are stalwart enough to stay and brave enough to make an effort to look, and to see. Best-selling writer Simon Winchester explores his love-ha te relationship with Calcutta, a city that provokes intense react ions in all who visit. Collaborating with his son Rupert, Simon m uses on his time spent in Calcutta, reflecting on his experiences , preconceptions and own individual fascination with the city. The Winchesters' personal essays are presented with a selection o f wide-ranging extracts penned by other visitors to this surprisi ng city. The result is a personal view of one of the world's most resonant destinations that also acts as an essential introductio n to the wealth of writing on the subject. Includes extracts by V.S. Naipaul, Paul Theroux, Rudyard Kipling, Geoffrey Moorhouse, Rabindranath Tagore, N.C. Chaudhuri, Gunter Grass, Dominique Lap ierre, James Morris, Mark Twain and Vikram Seth. Simon Winchest er's Calcutta provides a rare insight into the inspiration writer s gain from their love for a special place. Editorial Reviews F rom Booklist Ah, lovely Calcutta. Not actually, according to this best-selling British writer and his son, both of whom have great familiarity with this famous--infamous?--city that was capital o f India during the Raj. But Winchester pere et fils have put toge ther a book of travel writing that, in essence, says that even if Calcutta is dirty and smelly and chaotic (a public nightmare, a truly infernal city), it still casts a spell over those who stop there. For this anthology, the Winchesters each write a separate essay on what the city means to them and then, in tandem, supply a 50-page history of Calcutta, which, by their lively language, c annot fail to engage the travel literature lover. But the real me at of the book is the compilation of excerpts taken from a wide r ange of sources, including Rudyard Kipling, Rabindranath Tagore, and Paul Theroux. Like all good travel literature, these essays, and the Winchesters' introductory pieces, are capable of transpor ting you there--if not by magic carpet, at least on highly evocat ive prose.
