Item Description: AUTHORHOUSE, United States, 2007. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 226 x 147 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.This book is about some ghetto kids of the 1930 s and 40 s who became famous because they learned how to fight better than anyone else. We call them boxers and they came from the neighborhoods of New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and other cities. The Television Set was introduced to Americans in the late 1940 s as an alternative to radio. The Friday Night fights soon followed. The Friday Night fights were broadcast weekly by Gillete and Pabst Blue Ribbon from the late 1940 s into the early 1960 s. Along with The Milton Berle Show the Friday Night fights helped to sell millions of television sets during these years as families and friends gathered together to watch their heroes perform. FRIDAY S HEROES is also about a young man from the Italian section of Hartford, Connecticut who went on to become One of the Greatest Fighters in the history of the sport. His name was Willie Pep. This Will O the Wisp was World Featherweight Champion from 1942-1951 and campaigned for twenty-six years. Finally, this is a book about such people as Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Graziano, Chico Vejar, Kid Gavilan, Joey Giardello, Billy Graham, Rocky Marciano, Ezzard Charles, Joe Louis, Jake LaMotta, and others who are no longer the ghetto kids making a living from boxing, but middle-aged men with the roar of the crowd behind them. Today, the athlete - never to be confused with a boxer - is a celebrated figure. Yet as boxers these men seemed to have a different kind of respectability in our society, perhaps because they had to fight for a living. Nevertheless, no warrior that stalked the arena was more gallant than these kids. Willie Pep Remembers.Friday s Heroes is a book about people, these people. Bookseller Inventory # AAV9781434301826

Item Description: University Press of Florida, 2010. Book Condition: Used. This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 100% Guaranteed. Summary: Be a part of the legendary boxing gym in its prime "It was the gym where the Muhammad Ali legend was born. The 5th Street Gym in Miami and those that inhabited it are gone now, but inside these pages their spirit lives."--Thomas K. Stewart, Boxing Writers of America "Ferdie Pacheco takes you back to a time and place that no longer exist in boxing. On these pages, you are standing alongside the great characters of the sport, inside the wonderfully eclectic 5th Street Gym. You can feel the rhythm of the gym, smell the sweat, and hear the pounding of the heavy bags. What a ride."--Robert Cassidy, Newsday In its forty-year existence, the 5th Street Gym housed the training grounds for three of the greatest fighters the sport has ever known--Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, and Sugar Ray Leonard--and became the locus for a grand total of fourteen world champions. The site was also a magnet for a wide range of international celebrities including Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Jackie Gleason, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, and Sylvester Stallone, who were all absorbed into the gym's legend. The 5th Street Gym's beginnings trace back to 1950, when Chris Dundee, along with his brother Angelo, began promoting big-time boxing at Miami Beach. Tales from the 5th Street Gym includes a wealth of never-before-seen photographs and is the first to chronicle the fascinating history of the 5th Street Gym from one of its insiders--Dr. Ferdie Pacheco--with crucial contributions from Tom Archdeacon, Angelo Dundee, Suzanne Dundee Bonner, Enrique Encinosa, Howard Kleinberg, Ramiro Ortiz, Edwin Pope, Bob Sheridan, and Budd Schulberg. Discover the secret history of one of boxing's most hallowed grounds, as Pacheco recalls the rise, heyday, and fall of the "sweet science" at Miami Beach. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from Health and Safety of Professional Boxing: Hearings Before the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, United States Senate, One Hundred Third Congress, Second Session, January 20, and September 22, 1994 The committee met, pursuant to notice, at 9:30 a.m. in the Convention Center Board Room, 3150 Paradise Road, Las Vegas, NV, Hon. Richard H. Bryan, presiding. Staff members assigned to this hearing: Moses Boyd, senior counsel; and Sherman Joyce, minority professional staff member. Opening Statement Of Senator Bryan Senator Bryan. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to today s field hearing by the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee. Today s hearing will examine health and safety issues relating to professional boxing. We will be reviewing the role of State governments in establishing health and safety regulations, and their efforts to monitor the health and safety of professional boxers in ways in which health and safety provisions for professional boxers can be enhanced. We have invited a number of distinguished witnesses who have a wealth of experience in the sport of boxing to join with us this morning and to share their views with the subcommittee. Although techniques and styles of boxing have changed over the years, boxing today continues to be a major international attraction. Unquestionably one of the most popular sports, boxing is one of the marquee events at the summer Olympic games. Boxing is also one of the premier sports in the United States. Statistics show that 65 percent of all professional boxing events in the world take place in the United States, and 85 percent of all boxing revenue is generated here. Live and telecast events have tens of millions of fans. ESPN and USA cable networks, the leading television outlets for professional fighting have combined subscriptions of 120 million. Many of our Nation s leading sports figures come from the sport of boxing, including such legends as Joe Lewis, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, Mohammed Ali, and more recently, Sugar Ray Leonard.
