Bookseller Inventory # 9781159253523

Auszug: Heitor Villa-Lobos (; \* 5. März 1887 in Rio de Janeiro; + 17. 48 pp. Deutsch. Bookseller Inventory # 9781158779956

Having won 6 Doubles and 6 Mixed Doubles Tennis Grand Slam titles and finishing runners up in numerous other Grand Slam finals, he is considered to be one of the greatest and most respected contemporary doubles and mixed doubles players in the world. He is among the most successful professional Indian tennis players and is also the former captain of the Indian Davis Cup team. He is the recipient of India's highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 1996-1997, the Arjuna Award in 1990, and the Padma Shri award in 2001 for his outstanding contribution to tennis in India. Apart from his twelve Grand Slam victories at doubles and mixed doubles events, he is famous for his several memorable Davis Cup performances playing for India and also for winning a bronze medal for India in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He also achieved the rare Men's Doubles/Mixed Doubles double during the 1999 Wimbledon. His consecutive Olympic appearances from 1992 to 2008 make him the third Indian, after shooters Karni Singh and Randhir Singh, to compete at five Olympic Games. 92 pp. Englisch. Excerpt: Mangalorean Catholics (Konkani: Kodialche Katholik) are an ethno-religious community of Roman Catholics and their descendants, from the Mangalore Diocese (erstwhile South Canara district) on the southwestern coast of India. They are an Konkani community and speak the Konkani language. Contemporary Mangalorean Catholics are descended mainly from Goan Catholic settlers who migrated to South Canara from Goa, a state north of Canara, between 1560 and 1763 throughout the course of the Goa Inquisition, Portuguese-Adil Shahi wars, and the Portuguese-Maratha wars. Gradually they learned the languages of South Canara but retained Konkani as their mother tongue and preserved their lifestyle. Their 15-year captivity at Seringapatam imposed by Tipu Sultan, the de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore, from 24 February 1784 to 4 May 1799 led to the near extinction of the community. After the defeat of Tipu Sultan the community resettled in South Canara, and gradually prospered under the British. Although early assertions of a distinct Mangalorean Catholic identity date from the migration period, a developed Mangalorean Catholic cultural identity only emerged following the captivity. The culture of Mangalorean Catholics is a blend of Mangalorean and Goan cultures. After migration, they adopted some aspects of the local Mangalorean culture but retained many of their Goan customs and traditions. The Mangalorean Catholic diaspora is globally concentrated in the Persian Gulf Arab states and the Anglosphere. Another woodcut headpiece and another woodcut initial on A1 recto. Woodcut tailpiece on recto of final leaf. (16 ll.), 475 pp. [i.e., 477: pp. 1-63, p. 64 blank, followed by pp. 63-475], (1 blank l.). Pages 172 and 387 incorrectly numbered 372 and 397 respectively. 4°, twentieth century (third quarter) mottled period sheep (covers somewhat warped), spine with raised bands in five compartments, darker leather label, gilt letter, text-block edges sprinkled red from a previous binding. Some soiling throughout; tissue repair to small hole on half-title, not affecting text; date written in old ink at foot of title-page; tissue repair to fore-edge on final 6 leaves, not affecting text. Overall in good condition. ---- Fourth edition: "a book by a Brazilian about Brazil which was widely read in the eighteenth century and which is of great importance today for the portrait it gives of the social life, manners and customs at that time of the common people in Bahia and Minas Geraes" (Borba de Moraes [1983] II, 660). The @Compendio was once considered the first Brazilian novel.Marques Pereira's work on Catholic moral philosophy is arranged as an account of a journey from São Paulo to Bahia, illustrated by comments on sin, vice, the Ten Commandments, etc. The author mentions many events in Brazilian history, including Duguay-Trouin's capture of Rio de Janeiro, the Minas Geraes gold rush and the "War of the Emboabas."Marques Pereira (1689?-1730?) was probably born in Cayrú (Bahia), although Rodolfo Garcia thought him a native of Portugal (see Borba de Moraes and Bandeira). He is known to have left the town of Camamú in 1704, after breaking a law, and probably moved to Minas Geraes, where he witnessed the gold rush. He died in Bahia. The @Compendio was first published in Lisbon, 1728, and again in 1731 and 1752; a fifth edition appeared in 1765. The first edition is a work of the utmost rarity, the second almost as rare as the first, and none of the others is common. The fact that the book went through this many editions in less than forty years testifies to its enormous popularity: "Este livro, que raros serão capazes de ler integralmente, foi um dos mais lidos no seu tempo e no imediatamente posterior ?." (Veríssimo p. 76). A ghost edition of 1718 is sometimes cited; all references to it can be traced back to J.M. de Macedo (see Innocêncio and Blake).---- Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 659-70: "The first edition is very rare, the others are less scarce but are not common. Copies in good condition are difficult to find ?." Blake VI, 319-20: citing editions of 1718 and 1724 (which he had not seen), 1728 and 1760. Innocêncio VI, 315; XVII, 114. Barbosa Machado III, 505. Bosch 218. JCB III, i, 1273; @Portuguese and Brazilian Books 760/3. Rodrigues 1544: calling this the second edition. Not in Palha, which lists the 1731 edition (no. 4260). Ford, Whittem & Raphael, @Tentative Bibliography of Brazilian Belles-Lettres p. 104: citing only the editions of 1731, 1752 and 1765. Putnam, @Marvelous Journey pp. 75-6. Bandeira, @Brief History of Brazilian Literature p. 63. Jong, @Four Hundred Years of Brazilian Literature pp. 44-5. Carpeaux, @Pequena bibliografia crítica da literatura brasileira p. 43. Not in Howgego. NUC: NN, ICN, LNHT. Bookseller Inventory # 22378
