Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. Early days in Adams County, Nebraska, including the City of Hastings, are recalled in this New 50-page spiral bound booklet excerpted from the rare 1882 book: History of the State of Nebraska, originally published by the Western Historical Co. of Chicago, and Nebraska, a Guide to the Cornhusker State, a 1939 project of the Federal Writers of the Works Progress Administration. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the full-color front cover. Some of the places mentioned in the booklet include: Hastings (county seat), Inland, Juniata, Ayr, Kenesaw, Millington, Ludlow, Hazel Dell, Mayflower, Kingston, Morseville and Rosedale. Among the many subjects included are: physical features of the county, such as the Little Blue River; early settlers, such as Mortimer Kress, known as Wild Bill, and Jerome Fouts, better known as California Joe; Indian troubles; Organization of the county with the names of early officials; two instances of homicide; First death in the county and other firsts; Railroads; Manufacturers, newspapers, and Banks; Spirited competition over the location of the county seat; County poor farm; Grasshoppers; Agricultural society and other societies, often with names of officers; Farmers Alliance; Public Schools and Churches; Fire Department and Telephone Exchange; and other items of interest. The booklet contains biographies of many prominent residents. While primarily of interest to descendants, these often contain clues to the area and the times. Biographical sketches are given for: Hastings -- John M. Abbott, Samuel Alexander, John J. Anstrom, R.D. Babcock, John F. Ballinger, Silas M. Bates, Robert A. Batty, Fred. J. Benedict, A.W.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Stover and Erdmann deal with the crises confronting today's world and argue that solutions will come not from new technology nor in retreating to an idealized agrarian past, but by overhauling the beliefs that structure society. They link the dilemmas facing civilization to a fundamental rift running through societyone between religion and the humanities, rooted in subjective experience, and science, which emphasizes objective knowledge. They suggest a promising way of closing this rift found in the work of Nobel Laureate and neuroscientist Roger W. Sperry. They examine Sperry's lifework, including his famous split- brain research and show how it led him to propose a theory of consciousness that challenged science's dismissal of subjective experience as irrelevant. By seeing consciousness as an emergent, causal property of brain function, Sperry reinstated subjective experience into the scientific worldview, laid the foundation for the cognitive revolution that has since swept through psychology, and created a means by which science can help create ethical systems better able to deal with today's challenges. Stover and Erdmann conclude by looking at ways in which others have built upon Sperry's ideas, and they hold out the hope that, with the creation of belief systems more compatible with science, a way out of humanity's current troubles may indeed be found. The result is an excursion through a world of exciting ideas, and a book sure to absorb anyone interested in the fate of our speciesand how that fate might be influenced for the better. Students, researchers, scholars, and concerned citizens particularly interested in cognitive psychology, science and society, and futures studies will find the book intriguing. Argues that civilization-threatening crises can be solved only by adopting ethical systems more compatible with science. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Springs of Scientific Creativity was first published in 1983.Mathematician Henri Poincaré was boarding a bus when he realized that the transformations of non-Euclidian geometry were just those he needed in his research on the theory of functions. He did not have to interrupt his conversation, still less to verify the equation in detail; his insight was complete at that point. Poincaré's insight into his own creativity -- his awareness that preliminary cogitation and the working of the subconscious had prepared his mind for an intuitive flash of recognition -- is just one of many possible analyses of scientific creativity, a subject as fascinating as it is elusive. The authors of this book have chosen to search for the springs of scientific creativity by examining the lives and work of a dozen innovative thinkers in the fields of mathematics, physics, and chemistry from the seventeenth down to the mid-twentieth century. First prepared for delivery in a lecture series held at the University of Minnesota, these essays delve into the social, psychological, and intellectual factors that fostered creativity in the lives of Galilei Galileo, Isaac Newton, J. 8vo. 1 Seite. There are quite a number of individuals from countries all over the world who collect autographs. It is a pleasure for me to [ ] support such an interest".

First Edition. SIGNED BY TORSTEN WIESEL (on front wrapper). Offprint of Torsten Wiesel's Nobel Lecture, December 8, 1981. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1981 was divided, one half awarded to Roger W. Sperry "for his discoveries concerning the functional specialization of the cerebral hemispheres", the other half jointly to David H. Hubel and Torsten N. Wiesel "for their discoveries concerning information processing in the visual system." "Our vision works by the light around us being captured by a large number of light-sensitive cells located in the retinas at the back of our eyes. The light is converted into signals that are sent to the brain and there converted into visual impressions. Torsten Wiesel and David Hubel clarified how this process works during the 1960s: In the cerebral cortex signals are analyzed in sequence by cells with the specific tasks of interpreting contrasts, patterns, and movements. They also showed that this ability develops in children during the initial period after birth" (Nobel Prize website). Signed by Author(s).
