Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Self published by Howard Fast, New York, 1951. Hardback, NF/VG+. Stated First Edition ("Published December 1951 / First Edition"), presumed First Printing (because the price printed on front dj flap is"$5.00", indicating that this was part of a limited signed first edition because the first trade printing was priced $2.50). 8-3/8" tall; 363 pages; one- piece medium-brown cloth binding, gilt lettering on spine (title & author only), front board plain; plain ivory end pages; untrimmed fore edge. Book is in very fine condition: book is clean and square, binding tight, corners not bumped; slight creasing at head and heel of spine with no fabric damage, portions of end pages have slight darkening as though news clippings were kept there; otherwise the book is near fine or better. The interior is superb--strong hinges, flexible paper, and pages that are free of any marking, stains or other damage. Jacket is very good, with mild darkening to rear panel and moderate darkening to the spine and three minuscule chips (largest is 1/8" x 1/8") from head and heel of spine; dust jacket illustration by Charles White. No other discernible or objectionable faults on book or jacket such as marks or writing within, stains, tears, chips, or other damage that would diminish its appearance. No remainder mark, no previous owner markings or inscriptions, not price-clipped, not a book club edition, not a former library book. Signed legibly in blue ball point pen by the author in the middle of the front end page. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First edition. Corners 9 a bit bumped, very good in worn, about good dust jacket with several tears and some staining on the rear panel. Signed by the author. Because of growing concern over his Communist sympathies, Fast was unable to find a commercial publisher for this book and finally published it himself. In the midst of the Red Scare this study of the eternal quest for freedom, and of the dying days of the Roman Republic as it moved toward Empire, became a best-seller. Basis for the epic film produced by and starring Kirk Douglas, and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The magnificent cast also included Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton, scene-stealer Peter Ustinov (who won an Oscar), Tony Curtis, Woody Strode, and many others. Douglas's unflinching insistence that Dalton Trumbo receive screen credit for his script signaled the end of the Hollywood Blacklist. A compromised but reasonably presentable copy.

Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition, First Printing. 8vo, black eighth cloth with silver lettering on spine over blue cloth, ardhival polyester-protected pictorial dust jacket (unclipped) depicting a Jewish man with tallit, a priest, and a woman with photos of buildings, blue endpapers, 371 pages. Howard Melvin Fast (1914 - 2003) was an American novelist and television writer. Fast also wrote under the pen names E. V. Cunningham and Walter Ericson. Because of his Communism, he was Black-listed despite his widely recognized brilliance. Fast's first popular work was Citizen Tom Paine, a fictional account of the life of Thomas Paine. Perhaps his most enduring work is Spartacus (1951), a historical novel about the historic Roman slave revolt led by Spartacus around 71 BCE., which inspired the 1960 film directed by Stanley Kubrick (with screenplay secretly written by another black-listed brilliant writer, Dalton Trumbo), that starred Kirk Douglas as Spartacus. Condition: Solid and clean copy. No previous ownership or remainder marks. Some rubbing to dust jacket.
