Item Description: Spiral/Comb. Book Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. 8.5" x 11". An overview of the early days of Marion County, Kentucky, and biographies of some of the county's prominent residents from the late 1800s, are combined with a brief history of the state in this new 91-page book. The spiral-bound book includes biographies from the 1880's book, Kentucky: A History of the State by J.H. Battle, W.H. Perrin and G.C. Kniffin, excerpts from Kentucky, a Guide to the Bluegrass State, a 1939 product of the WPA Writer's Program, and information from various internet sources. The tri-color front cover is on 80# card stock and has been protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is photocopied on 60# opaque 8.5" x 11" paper. The individual biographies often shed light on the area and the times, including the Civil War era, as well as providing specific genealogical data. A listing for Loretto Academy is among the biographies, which include: Benjamin F. Abell, Franklin Anderson, Samuel Avritt, John Barr, Edward Briscoe Baxter, George W. Beall, Nicholas T. Item Description: Gulf Publishing Company. Spiral/Comb. Book Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. 8.5" x 11". Early days in Calcasieu Parish, LA, which includes the communities of Dequincy, Lake Charles, Sulphur, Westlake, Iowa and Vinton, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this brand new 118-page 8.5" x 11" spiral-bound book, photocopied on 60# opaque paper. The full-color front cover is protected with a vinyl sheet. The book includes excerpts from two hard-to-find vintage publications: Southwest Louisiana Biographical and Historical, edited by William Henry Perrin and originally published by the Gulf Publishing Company in 1891, and Louisiana, a Guide to the State, compiled by Workers of the Writers' Program of the WPA in 1941. In addition to the usual data found in county histories, this book looks at the reasons for the population boom in the Lake Charles area, Reese Perkins and his backwoods justice, the speedy growth of timber in this parish, Calcasieu as "the home of the fig", a poem called "Evening on the Calcasieu", the importance of railroads, the sulphur mine, the story of how Lisbon turned into Bagdad, leaving the unwary holding the bag, and the high cost of ferries. In addition to the many names mentioned in the history section, there are a number of biographies of prominent citizens: D.D. Andrus, B.C. Andrus, Joseph A. Anderson, Capt. J.W. Bryan, Thompson Bird, Dennis E. Baggett, E.H. Burleson, Dr. J.M. Coley, Joseph Cooper, Charles Carbello, Emile Corbello, John F. Cloney, G.W. Corkran, A.L. Cole, F.R. Curtis, S.L. Zawadsky. The WPA book gives a nostalgic glimpse from a 1941 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. The main excerpt concerns the City of Lake Charles, and besides an overview, it includes the Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District, a map of the city and numerous points of interest, such as McNeese State College. There is also a tour that includes Iowa, Sulpher, Vinton and Toomey. A map of southwestern Louisiana is also in the book. Bookseller Inventory # 000936

Item Description: Cambridge Library Collection, United Kingdom, 2009. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 216 x 140 mm. Brand New Book. The Athenae Cantabrigienses was the most ambitious of several large writing projects undertaken by Charles Henry Cooper, a keen historian, successful lawyer and town clerk of Cambridge in the mid-nineteenth century. He enlisted the help of his elder son, Thompson Cooper, for this book, a collection of carefully-researched biographies of distinguished figures with Cambridge connections, inspired by Anthony Wood s Athenae Oxonienses (1692). Two volumes were published during Cooper senior s lifetime, but only 60 pages of this third volume (which covers 1609-1611) were completed during his lifetime, and he died in 1866 leaving an enormous quantity of notes. Even in its incomplete state, the work contains about seven thousand biographies; their subjects include clergymen, military commanders, judges, artists, scholars and benefactors of the University. Volume 3 was finally published in 1913 and contains additions and corrections to the previous volumes and an updated index. Bookseller Inventory # AAA9781108000383

Excerpt: William McKinley, Jr. (January 29, 1843 - September 14, 1901) was the 25th President of the United States (1897-1901). He is best known for winning fiercely fought elections, while supporting the gold standard and high tariffs; he succeeded in forging a Republican coalition that for the most part dominated national politics until the 1930s. He also led the nation to victory in 90 days in the Spanish American War. McKinley, a native of Ohio, was of Scots-Irish and English descent, born into a large family, and served with distinction in the Civil War. He became an able lawyer, quickly joined the Ohio Republican party ranks, was happily married by age 28 and became a father briefly before the untimely deaths of his two daughters. When wife Idas health suddenly diminished in 1873, McKinley assumed a caregiving role for her, very much ahead of his time, which eventually allowed her to serve as First Lady with dignity; his need for a diversion from these duties prompted him to launch his political career.
