Institutional barriers to renewable energy development in India/Pradeep Monga. "Majority of the population in the developing countries live in rural areas heavily dependent on biomass for meeting their energy needs. However, severe pressure on the natural resources is rendering the rural energy systems economically and environmentally unsustainable in many regions of the world. In order to deal with this other energy crisis. Several countries--India and China being notable examples have been promoting renewable energy technologies based on solar, wind, water, and biomass resources in a big way. In the last two decades, several successes, as well as failures, have been experienced which could provide valuable feedback to formulate policies for better implementation of the programmes in the future. An attempt has been made to synthesize these experiences in this publication.".

The articles in this volume reflect the ethos and aims of public administration as visualised by the founding fathers of free India and to what extent various social political and economic developments have realised their hopes and expectations. Has public administration become quite the reverse of what was fondly visualised. Does it lack sensitivity to the sufferings of the deprived masses and spirit of self less public service. Do people still have some choice or are they destined to live with rampant corruption. Readers may find answers to such and other vexed questions from among the writing of some promi.

Not many people know that the busy and bustling capital city of Delhi and its surroundings have a long past going back thousands of years. Prehistoric stone tools have surfaced here and many ancient remains have been found sometimes accidentally by farmers tilling their fields and at other times by archaeologists carrying out systematic excavations. A mound one passes everyday or a narrow strip of stream tells a story of ancient times. Centuries of history coexist with metro stations and plush cars. The readings in this book give us glimpses of the lives of people who lived over the centuries in the Delhi area and how these details are pieced together by historians. It brings into focus the importance of the historian's method and the sources of information found in ancient texts archaeology and even legends and folklore sometimes hanging on the thread of a slender historical fact. This collection of essays has been put together by a teacher for students of history but will also be of enormous value to a large number of other interested readers. 228 pp.
