Book Description: Asia Pub. House, 1962. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Dust jacket condition: No Jacket. From the Foreword: THIS is a very notable publication. It is a collection of writings of Sangita Kalanidhi the late Mr. T. V. Subba Rao on Indian Music. Mr. Subba Rao was one of the outstanding personalities in the world of music for a period of over three decades, and the present generation does not need much by way of introduction to him. He was a member of the family -of Ami jagirdars and belonged to the class of noblesse. He was a graduate of the Madras University with two degrees as Bachelor of Arts and of Law, and was an Advocate of the Madras High Court. But more than all this, he had a profound knowledge of the theory and practice of music. The credit for having discovered this goes to the Madras Music Academy. In 1927, the Congress held its annual session in Madras, and Mr. T. V. Subba Rap was in charge of the music festival which was arranged as a side show. It was then that the public got its first glimpse of his great knowledge of music, which he had, out of his innate modesty, hid like a light in a bushel. Out of this festival was born the Madras Music Academy, and Mr. Subba Rao was all through his life its main pillar. He was in charge of the activities of the Academy on its technical side, and it is to his ability and his wholehearted devotion to it that the Academy owes its present position as the premier cultural institution in Carnatic Music. He presided over the first conference of experts of the Academy; he took a leading part in the learned debates of the experts of that body in its annual conferences; he was the editor in charge of the Music Academy Journal; and he was latterly the Principal of the Teachers' College of Music. Mr. Subba Rao had a mastery over the science of music. He had studied the classical treatises on sangita sdstra, and what is more, he was able to interpret it in relation to classical music, now in vogue. He was not a mere musicologist. He had undergone training in practical music on orthodox lines and had practised vlna. He had an extraordinarily keen and subtle perception of svaras and s'rutis, so much so the slightest lapse from the correct s'ruti in the rendering of a rdga could be seen reflected in a knowing look on his face. 248 pages. Book Description: Cambridge University Press/ Foundation Books, 2008. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. . (illustrator). First edition. . Reception of English: Cultural responses in Telugu Documents is a collection of various text types written in English by Telugu writers along with English translations of Telugu texts. The documents included in this collection span over two hundred years of the Telugu-English interface with the earliest dating back to 1825 and the most recent to 2006 and cover a wide range of selections from autobiography, personal/historical essays, official reports, creative writing and criticism. This study attempts to record the responses of the Telugu people to the British ? their rule, the introduction of the study of English, English manners, English culture, etc. Unlike most academic enterprises that study the interface between Indian languages and English that tend to focus on the influence of English on Indian languages, the documents compiled here represent different degrees of accommodation, incorporation and rejection of colonial culture. This book will be of use to students, scholars and teachers of cultural studies, postcolonial studies, translation studies and comparative literature. Contents Face to Face with English Acknowledgements 1. Caveli Venkata Ramaswami (1825) 2. Yenugula Veeraswamy (1838) 3. Matukumalli Nrisimhasastry (1863) 4. Vennelacunty Soob Row (1873) 5. Book Description: New Century Publications, 2008. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. . (illustrator). . The largest portion of the natural resources of India consists of land and by far the largest number of its inhabitants is engaged in agriculture. Therefore, in any scheme of economic development of the country, agriculture holds a position of basic importance. Agricultural sector occupies a key position in the Indian economy and provides employment to about 65 per cent of the working population of India. The economic development process guided by the market- driven parameters has benefited selected sections of society. The fruits of liberalisation and globalisation have not percolated to the agricultural and rural sectors sufficiently. The farming community is by and large in crisis due to non-protective attitude of the government. The agriculture has become unviable with liberalised imports, global competitiveness and volatile nature of market prices. In spite of recent corrective measures, the farming community is in distress and farmers? suicides are taking place unabatedly in different parts of the country in general and in southern states in particular. The present volume contains research findings of scholars specialising in different aspects of Indian agriculture. The work is fairly replete with inspiring and enlightening matter and hence it will commend itself to all categories of readers, particularly academicians, researchers and students of economics, commerce and business management.
