Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1918. Excerpt: . . . CHAPTER XIII THE LAST DAYS OF DAMASCUS As we have remarked, Benhadad III probably perished in the battle of Hadrach in the time. of Zakir of Hamath, and was succeeded by Tab-el. 1 According to Tiglathpileser (ann. 205) Tab-el came from Bit-Hadara. Consequently he cannot have been a scion of the dynasty of Hazael, but must have been a usurper. He is referred to in Is. 7: 6 as the father of Rezin (A T U 74). During his reign quiet seems to have prevailed in central Syria. The only events of moment must have occurred in connection with the Hatarikka campaigns of 765 and 755. The strength of Israel and of Hamath evidently led Tab-el to live a peaceful life. Concerning his decease and the time of Rezins accession we know nothing. The brief period of glory enjoyed by Israel under Jeroboam II was soon over. The dynasty of Jehu, founded on murder, ends with the murder of Zachariah, son of Jeroboam, after a reign of six months by the ursurper Shallum ben Jabesh (2 Kings 15: 13-16). The murderer himself only enjoys the possession of the throne for a month, when he is attacked in Samaria by Menahem ben Gadi and loses his life (15: 17-22). The conditions of civil war accompanying these changes greatly weakened Israel (cf. Is. 9: 19, 20). It is peculiarly significant that both Shallum and Menahem are from the region of Gilead, the land which Aram had threshed and which had been the scene of so many bloody struggles. They were doubtless hostile to the Aramaeans and were bent on in 1 Duhm, Jesaias-ad. 7: 6, corrects the name into T6bel. But 1 would point out that the name appears to occur in A B L IV no. 221 Ob. 2 as Tab-ili, a scribe in Syria, who reports that he has been at Nineveh and has seen the face of Nabu and of the king. He tells also that Abi-ili, the tax ove. . . This item ships from La Vergne,TN. Paperback. Bookseller Inventory # 9781235658013

Chotzner studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary and at the university in Breslau, where he obtained a doctorate for a Hebrew adaptation of F. M. von Bodenstedt's Die Lieder des Mirza-Schaffy (1868). From 1869 to 1880 and again from 1893 to 1897 Chotzner was minister of the Belfast Hebrew Congregation. From 1880 to 1892 he was in charge of a "Jewish house" for boys attending the famous Harrow school. Leaving Belfast once more in 1893, Chotzner became one of the resident scholars at the rabbinical college established by Moses Montefiore at Ramsgate (England). From 1905 he lived in retirement in London. Chotzner devoted his scholarly interests chiefly to humor and satire in Jewish literature (from the Bible to modern Hebrew writers), and he wrote on this subject a number of articles which appeared in the Jewish Quarterly Review and later in book form (Hebrew Humour and Other Essays, 1905, and Hebrew Satire, 1911). He published a small volume of humoristic essays and poems (Leil Shimmurim, 1864) and wrote his youthful memoirs (Zikhronot, 1885). Though far from being Orthodox, Chotzner opposed radical reform and showed little sympathy for Herzl's Zionism. His son ALFRED JAMES (1873-1939), a graduate of Cambridge University, rose to be a High Court judge at Calcutta and a member of the British parliament. -- Encyclopaedia Judaica CD Rom 1997. Item Description: British Museum, London, 1961. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Facsimile Edition. 256 x 228mm (10.25 x 9.24 inches). xviii, 215 pages of text. The manuscript reproduced in this facsimile edition is the unique Hebrew codex Or. 10013, which forms part of the Gaster collection of Hebrew and Samaritan manuscripts in the British Museum. It contains the commentaries ont he tractates BABHA KAMMA BABHA MESI`A & BAHBA BHATHERA: of the Babylonian Talmud by Zachariah ben Judah Aghmati, a contemporary of Moses ben Maimon in the 12th century. The author has collected the Halakhic opinions of the great Talmudic authorities and excerpted the more important contributions from various sources. His extensive quotations from Geonic and later Halkhic literature have preserved for aus large parts of Rabbinic writings now lost or existing only in fragmentary form. The work is also valuable for some of its textual variants of the Talmud to which the author occasionally draws attention. Its publication represents a significant contribution to Rabbinic literature and Talmuldic scholarship. Bookseller Inventory # 000468

Item Description: Wilfrid Laurier University Press, Canada, 2010. Hardback. Book Condition: New. New. 230 x 155 mm. Brand New Book. This is an analysis of a major decade in Canadian-Israeli relations, dealing with significant events that led to the Six-Day War of 1967 and its aftermath. Using primary documentation from the National Archives of Canada and the Israeli State Archives, Zachariah Kay shows that although Canada was committed to Israel s existence, its foreign policy was governed by the scrupulous impartiality that had become a principle guideline when dealing with Israel and the Middle East. The first section of the book deals with the Progressive Conservative government headed by John Diefenbaker in the first part of the decade and his Israeli counterpart, David Ben Gurion. The second section considers the latter part of the decade, with reference to Lester Pearson s Liberal government and the Israeli prime minister Levi Eshkol. The book shows that in spite of political differences between the leaders and their parties, the Canadian bureaucracy maintained a policy of impartiality, following the lines of non-commitment and prudence practised prior to the re-establishment of Jewish sovereignty in Palestine with the State of Israel. Issues such as the Arab-Israeli conflict, nuclear power, governments and parliaments, and the pre- and post-Six-Day War are dealt with in detail. The assessed evidence proves that impartiality as a quasi-bureaucratic ordinance kept Canada on the path it maintained in subsequent decades into the twenty-first century. The book provides an essential understanding of events surrounding today s Canadian relationship with Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Bookseller Inventory # AAG9781554581870
