Item Description: Henry Holt & Company, New York, 1988. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. Fine in fine dust jacket. A Fine Copy In Near Fine Dust Jacket 120 p. Audience: General/trade. Like many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing didn't begin to paint until she was well into middle age. Her art has served her as a way to reconstruct and preserve the spiritual fabric of her life, which began in a provincial Galician town in 1908. Her art has served her as a way to reconstruct and preserve the spiritual fabric of her life, which began in a provincial Galician town in 1908. After a brief autobiographical introduction, Mrs. Hessing comments on the paintings, describing the stories they tell, their iconography and how she came to make them. Many paintings re-create well-known stories from the Bible and Jewish folklore; others recall her childhood in Zaleszczyki, where she lived until she was 6. A few pictures relate to the places she has lived since the end of World War II, particularly Israel (briefly) and Australia. Mrs. Hessing's ingenuous style is strikingly reminiscent of Chagall in some particulars. The paintings reveal an exuberant colorist and an intuitively efficient organizer of pictorial space, especially when she chooses to tell a story like that of Abraham and Hagar sequentially on a single panel. The real text of this charming book is subliminal, however; it is a morality tale that preaches faith and optimism in the face of adversity and a resounding belief in the essential goodness of one's fellow man. In transmuting her life into art, Mrs. Hessing has obviously edited out the distressing episodes (only two pictures depict the Holocaust), choosing instead to idealize beauty, the verities of religious and cultural tradition and the wonder of childhood. Between the Pisca and Omulew Rivers (branches of the Narew River in Northern Poland) several Russian attacks broke down under the German fire on March 29, and a few days later the night attacks of the Russians, on the left bank of the Omulew were likewise repulsed. On the Skwa, near Klimki nearly 900 Russian soldiers and two officers were made prisoners on March 31. The battle front in the Carpathians along the Dukla and Lupkow Pass has been shifted somewhat southward and fighting continues on both sides of the Latorcza and the Ondawa valleys. In the region of Zaleszczyki the Austrians captured, on March 27, eleven Russian points of support and took over 500 prisoners. Advancing across the Dniester River, east of the same place, the Russians were again repulsed on March 30 after a vigorous fight. In the hills near Benyavoelgz, south of Labotczrey, on March 28 and 30, numerically stronger Russian attacks were repulsed by regiments of the Fourth Cavalry Division and troops of the First Landsturm Infantry Brigade. North of the Uzsok Pass, in the Carpathians, Russian night attacks failed and over 2,000 Russians were made prisoners. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Not illustrated. 1915 Excerpt: .2,000 were killed, 3,000 were made prisoners, seven machine guns, one cannon and several ammunition cars were taken by the Germans. Since March 1, the Austrian official report reads, we have captured altogether 183 officers and 39,942 men and six machine guns. In the southern war theater there has been no change. WHY ENGLAND IS DEGENERATING. High and Low on a Downward Path--A Graphic Account of the Great Majority in London.
