Item Description: A & C Black, 1903. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. London .This is the variant listed as item 3 in Mcilvaine . Apple green with even colour ,which my scanner does not truly reflect, it is one of the Wodehouse rarities and the only other copy I am aware of is the one listed in Mcilvaine ,which almost certainly would have been the James Heinemann copy which sold in his 1998 sale .It is listed as olive green but this would not have been the original colour as these early illustrated books had their wrappers removed and over the next hundred years built up a dust patina that dulled but also darkened the cloth. The book conforms to Mcilvaine with gilt lettering on spine and has all the plates ,but one has been replaced ,no inscriptions, foxing, staining or loose pages .This is an extremely rare item and although there are probably more copies other than the two I am aware of ,its unlikely they would be as good as this copy as the cloth on the spine scorched when exposed and the colours faded . It comes with a facsimile that Mark Terry and I created which does'nt really add any further value but protects the illustrations . We used A Prefects Uncle as a guide and as there was no lettering on the back panel and flaps and we knew the colour of the paper we used this as a template, with the St Austins illustrations. If a copy turns up we may be proved wrong but the wrapper is clearly marked that it is a recreation , and in the meantime protects the book. Bookseller Inventory # PGWUKFTOSA1

Item Description: Cambridge Black Cross, Cambridge. N.D. c.1970, 1970. First edition. Narrow folio. 24 pages. Cover illustrations and other illustrations by Anthony Gormley. Stapled wrappers. The cover design is a re-working of the Leda and the Swan theme and although the illustrations are not credited the closest in style to the cover illustration is a page of eight small drawings; probably the bird-like creature printed three times on the title-page is his as well. Gormley read archaeology, anthropology and the history of art at Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1968 to 1971, and it was during this period he met the artists Michael Craig-Smith and Barry Flanagan who were artists-in-residence there. It was only after he went to India, from 1971 to 1974, that he decided to be an artist and enrolled at Saint Martin's School of Art.Covers dusty and nicked and rubbed at edges. Very good. Item Description: A & C Black, London, 1928. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul (illustrator). 1st Edition. A & C Black London 1928 1st Edition. 4to., 205mm x 270mm blue cloth backed decorative leaf patterned paper boards with black and white paste down image of two fairies (measuring 90 x 110 mm) together with titles to the front and gilt titles to the spine. 94pp +2pp publisher's ads, grey silhouette endpapers with 8 colour plates and 8 black and white plates together with a number of black and white images within the text. The cover is in clean and bright condition with sharp but ever so lightly rubbed corners and some very minor loss of paper along the bottom edge of the lower fore edge corners. The edges, which are usually fairly chipped in this volume, have virtually no wear. The cloth spine is only very lightly rubbed, has a small crease along the top and two small faint dark marks on the spine which are difficult to see unless you look very carefully. Internally the book is near fine. There are no names, inscriptions bookplates or other marks and the endpapers are very clean and bright, as are the pages and plates. There are one or two extremely light foxing spots only on the very edge of a couple of pages - this is as clean a copy of one of Outhwaite's works as we have seen. A beautiful work in lovely clean condition. Bookseller Inventory # 000100

Item Description: A & C Black, London, 1923. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul (illustrator). 1st Edition. 4to 27.5x 20.5cm. Blue cloth backed floral paper boards with a paper label with image and titles to the front and gilt title to the spine. Internally, the volume has sepia pictorial endpapers, viii 91pp + (4) ads with 8 colour and 8 black & white plates with fore and bottom edges uncut. The book comes with its very scarce original glassine wrapper and unclipped dust jacket. The front board is clean with an un-rubbed bright label and just a little fading towards the bottom. There is a little light rubbing to the bottom edge mainly at the corner and slightly more so at the top. There is a little cockling to the rear board and a patch of fading. There is some patchy loss of colour to the spine although the gilt remains clear and bright. Internally, the book is near fine with only very light toning to the endpapers and a little dust staining to the uncut edges. There is a small neat gift inscription to the title page dated 1923. The glassine wrapper is mostly intact with a little loss to the spine edge corner of the bottom board together with some significant clouding to that area and to a much lesser extent the edges. The very scarce dust jacket, although complete, is somewhat grubby particularly around the spine and edges. It also has some rubbing to the spine, shoulders and fore edges together with a number of small closed tears to the edges, mainly of 1 - 2 mm although there is one of 3 cm at the bottom edge of the rear board, 2 of around 1cm along the top edge at the back and one each on the top and bottom edge at the front. The top edge is also a little creased. All in all a lovely copy of this scarce first edition that is very clean internally and comes with its very scarce original glassine cover and dust wrapper.
