He has his own way of delivering the news to make it interesting for the audience and along the way pointed out the absurdities of governmental curiosities centered mostly around lawyers, bureaucrats, Washington insiders, lobbyists, and hypocrites of all stripes. This book is a good does of a long forgotten newscaster who was more than a talking head. A clean very presentable copy.

An increasingly uncommon first edition in collector's condition. Original price intact on dust jacket, as necessary for a collectible book. Hersey's intentions are patently allegorical and some of the names decipher easily enough: Pliny Forward is the learned and progressive young man of the town, Roswell Coit is a lascivious lout, Dorcas Thrall a patient spinster. Hersey makes much of a small town's strange juxtapositions of centuries and customs, the fact that television sets and candlesticks are used in the same house, gasoline stations and whipping posts exist side by side, and the very same conversation contains the latest neologisms and such quaint survivals as "raise high tantrabogus," "betwattled after," "I swan," and just about every rural expression you ever heard. Selectman Avered is busy marshaling the townsfolk for a drive against a teeming colony of woodchucks, groundhogs, or marmots that have become audacious and threaten, at least in the heated imagination of the Selectman, to infiltrate the town and dispossess its inhabitants. Things turn out catastrophically for the elder Avered as the townspeople catch him removing a cinder from a woman's eye, draw the wrong conclusion, and decide to give him an old-fashioned public whipping for the imaginary misdeed, and also for having actually committed adultery and been caught at it a long time ago, for being too smart and too impractical, for having led them on a wild marmot chase, and because they require a scapegoat for all their rancor, guilt, misgivings, and sins.Hersey again moves carefully about on the neatly outlined beachheads of big political issues and humanitarian sentiments and has brought forth a well-constructed, skillfully executed, and pleasing book.

From the inside flap: This hilarious autobiographical book chronicles the cockeyed misadventures of an American reporter (NY Herald Tribune) in Europe and Africa, 1946-8. Whether William Attwood is telling a native African orchestra the correct way to play jazz, making a series of comical attempts to interview Russian generals, covering the official closing of the Paris brothels, flying madly across the Sahara Desert in the wake of President Auriol, watching M. Viola grow a fuzz on bald pates, recounting the merely incredible facts of a visit to fantastic Andorra, or slipping from the toils of a blonde Red spy queen," he is witty, always entertaining, constantly civilized. In this book, the author takes pieces of her family history and weaves them into this collection of imagined fiction stories. She starts with stories that are embroiderings of her family's history, then follows them with more personal pieces, where details are freely changed, but faith is kept with a core of memoir. The 11 stories are split between historical tales inspired by the real-life events affecting Munro?s ancestors and contemporary stories inspired by events in Munro?s own life. In a stunningly assured debut, Smith has produced a crime thriller distinguished by an unflagging pace, authoritative use of detail and an appealing heroine. In vigorous, literate prose, Smith delivers characters of depth and dimension who inhabit the wildly diverse worlds of Southern California, each rendered with a cinematic eye. Her protagonist is Ana Grey, an ambitious, brash young FBI agent. With seven years in the L.A. field office and a recent "perfect bust" of a bank robber, Ana is ready to move up. A resentful superior stands in the way, however, and instead of getting transferred, Ana is assigned to a high-profile case involving a megawatt movie star of a certain age who has brought charges against a local doctor for addicting her to drugs. At the same time, Ana receives a phone call asking her to help the two young children of a recent street-shooting victim in Santa Monica--an immigrant from El Salvador who told friends that Ana was her cousin. Ana insists it's a hoax: abandoned as an infant by her father, a migrant worker from Mexico, she was raised by her mother, now deceased, and her beloved grandfather, a retired Santa Monica cop. Then Ana learns that the Salvadoran woman had worked for the physician charged in the drug case and finds herself tangled in events that lace together both personal and professional aspects of her life and trigger a troubling series of forgotten memories of her childhood. Moving through an array of settings--L.A.'s crowded Latino section, El Piojilla; the blue-collar Santa Monica neighborhood of her youth; the modern elegance of the "overbuilt upscale enclave" known as "north of Montana"--Ana grapples with more death, Hollywood politics, personal betrayal and her own seething desires. Wisely leaving some ends untied, Smith resolves the central themes of this seamless narrative in this smashing story.

Dust jacket price has been clipped. Protected with vinyl. A novel of suspense, business rivalry and political struggles in which Niccolo, recently widowed has to cope with his new status. His involvement in the fierce civil war in Cyprus brings about direct conflict with his former mistress, now married to this deadliest enemy. Set in 1462 Venice Nicholas vander Poele, a merchant/adventurer, is wealthy, widowed, and twenty-one-and looking only for freedom from responsibility. Suddenly he finds himself courted by both factions in a bitter power struggle. On one side, the Cypriot queen, Carlotta; on the other, her bastard brother, James -- they are the Lusignans, known to their people as the race of scorpions. The prize they contend for is Cyprus itself. And what a prize to tempt both the entrepreneur and the daring in Niccolo. Cyprus: an island of incalculable strategic value to all the Mediterranean powers , a land rich beyond dreams. of avarice in a priceless commodity-sugar. It is an arena worthy of Niccolos' brilliance, shrewdness, and courage. This book is Dunnett at her best. Writing with all her customary wit, suspense, and fidelity to history, and with a rich understanding of the complex interplay of power politics, business rivalry, and private emotion, she gives us once again a peerless re-creation of the turbulent world of 15th century Europe. Race of Scorpions both continues this saga and stands on its own, an enthralling historical novel of the first order.
