First edition. The main assumptions with which the study begins are as follows: (1) In the early stages of development there are many features in indigenous cultures which have a positive supporting role to play, and without which local businesses might never engage. (2) The criteria of successful economic development should not necessarily be those which are applicable in our own society; the criteria are relative to the social context. (3) Economic development is not truly separate from, but is part and parcel with, that types of commercial activity and forms of organization are related to local values. (4) Though the society I describe has made remarkable progress in certain limited fields, it still needs help and guidance for successful change; but this guidance, if unaware of the implications of the above three assumptions, is just as likely to do harm as good. Condition: Light edge wear else a better than very good copy.

In he fall of 1962, George Spindler suggested that a volume on componential analysis might form a useful numb er in the series of special issues planned for the american Anthropologist. From that point to this, work on the volume has marked by the active cooperation and assistance of a number of people and institutions. A series of papers would show componential analysis for what it was and for what it was not, which would strip it of the aura of hieratic on its place in anthropology.
