Color illustration at title page. The American Nurses Association (ANA) is a professional organization to advance and protect the profession of nursing. It started in 1896 as the Nurses Associated Alumnae and was renamed the American Nurses Association in 1911. Initial organizational plans were made for the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States of America on September 2, 1896 at Manhattan Beach Hotel near New York City. On February 11-12, 1897 those plans were ratified in Baltimore, Maryland at a meeting that coincided with the annual conference of the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses. Isabel Hampton Robb served as the first president. A major early goal of the organization was the enhancement of nursing care for American soldiers.[ On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the ANA, this compendium was created. It depicts the gradual expansion of nursing's role in health care from the time of the Revolutionary War to the present. It also summarizes the impressive accomplishments of the American Nurses' Association during the past eighty years. One Strong Voice presents a thought-provoking assess of nursing--its past, its present, and its future. Section One highlights the impact of the American Nurses' Association on the development of nursing as an occupation and as a profession. Section Two is a collection of the convention addresses as each president reviewed the organization's activities, identified the issues and problems confronting nursing, and proposed future directions for the association and the profession. In publishing this book the ANA provided an historical perspective to be used as a frame of reference for discussion of current issues facing nursing and nurses. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.
