Autobiography of a veteran Australian aviator who fought in the 1914-18 war, was appointed senior officer to the independent Air Force which later became known as the Royal Australian Air Force, and who contributed to the organisation of the Empire Air Training Scheme during the Second World War. Williams details the government's decision to establish the Air Force as a separate service and of the opposition from Navy and Army to that decision. He is critical of the 1939 decision to appoint and English officer as Chief of the Air Staff and of the way in which RAAF personnel were employed during the war. He describes his contribution to the EATS and his work as RAAF representative on the Combined Chiefs of Staff organisation in Washington. As Director-General of Civil Aviation he tells of the development of post-war civil transport and the responsibilities of the Department of Civil Aviation.
