Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. 155pp, maps, photos, index, dust jacket, BRAND NEW in dust jacket. NEVER READ! In December 1860, 15-year-old Benjamin Rawlings left home without informing his parents and traveled to Charleston where he enlisted in the 1st South Carolina Volunteers. There he participated in the bombardment of Ft. Sumter. He returned home and enlisted in the 30th Virginia Infantry, eventually rising to the rank of captain. His memoi rs are interesting & informative. Rawlings experienced combat, camp life, and prison life (captured at Mine run and incarcerated at Old Capitol Prison, Ft. McHenry & Pt. Lookout). Eventually, Rawling s was exchanged and returned to the trenches of Petersburg in December 1864. He was with Lee's army at Appomattox. This delightful memoir is based on the reminiscences he dictated to his son as well a s family scrap books, letters and documents which comprise the Rawlings Family Papers.
