Gently read. . . . . .Second, enlarged edition of this wonderful collection of black and white photos. Dr. Philip Hastings helped transform the look and feel of railroad photos by showing not just the locomotives but also the people who worked on them and the landscapes they traversed. Few outside of New England are aware that the Canadian National subsidiary Grand Trunk had extensive operations throughout Maine and northern Vermont. The Grand Trunk main line from Portland, Maine, through Island Pond, Vermont, to Monreal, Quebec, was a conveyor for international trade between these two important Eastern ports. Portland was an important connection for Montreal, especially when the St. Lawrence River was frozen for the winter, seasonal traffic of wheat and produce were the line's mainstay for many years. From steam to diesel, legendary photographer Phillip R. Hastings was there to capture it all on film. This volume show the face of New England when steam ruled the rails and the Grand Trunk helped bind Canada and the US together. With map. 64 pages.

Soft cover. Condition: New. No Jacket. Reprint. 98 Pages with Black/White Photos. A look at the operation of the Susie-Q from Little Ferry, New Jersey, to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Features many rare scenes of Russian Decapods, Streamliners, RS1s, and RDC's along with neighboring roads Lehigh & New England and New York, Ontario & Western. A must-have for the Sus-kee fan. Today's New York, Susquehanna & Western has its roots in a tidewater-to-Great Lakes railroad plan dating to the 1860s. The New Jersey Midland Railway was formed in 1870 as the merger of two existing projects looking to connect industrial Patterson, New Jersey, with the antrhacite fields of eastern Pennsylvania. After a series of reorganizations and mergers, the New York, Susquehanna & Western emerged in 1882. Through stock purchases, the NYS&W came under control of the Erie Railroad in 1898, and continued to be operated as a subsidiary until 1940. Bankruptcy came to the Susquehanna in 1937, of which it would not emerge until 1953. Not Signed.

Laminated Pictorial Boards. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 97 pages b/w photos - An informal history of the Dixie Line, an important component of the Louisville & Nashville. The NC&StL was chartered in Tennessee in 1845 and served the people of the south until it was absorbed by the Louisville & Nashville in 1957. The Chattanooga Division was built from Nashville southeastward through the rolling Tennessee flatlands beginning in 1849. Branch lines connect along its way to tap the rich resources of central Tennessee. Much of this line is still in use today by CSX. The Nashville Division extended from Nashville westward through Bruceton and McKenzie to the end of the line in Hickman, Kentucky. The trackage from Nashville to Hollow Rock Junction was the original Nashville & Northwestern, and was for years referred to by crews as "The Windy" because of numerous curves and grades. Just after the Civil War, the Nashville & Northwestern expanded into western Tennessee. A bridge over the Tennessee River at Johnsonville was completed in 1867, and the line was extended west to Hollow Rock Junction. Merged with the Hickman & Obion Railroad in 1868, the combined Nashville Division continued on west through McKenzie and Union City and terminated at Hickman, Kentucky. The Paducah & Memphis Division was leased from the L&N, becoming a dominant freight and passenger hauler by the 1920s. Author Charles Castner presents an informal history of "The Dixie Line" with detailed text, illustrated with many great balack and white photographs of steam, early diesels, depots and bridges.
