Oblong quarto, hardcover (black cloth), gilt letters, xii, 484 pp. Fine, in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: The second volume of The Catawbans continues the story of the people of Catawba County. North Carolina, into the twentieth century. As the notion of material Progress took over their lives in the early part of the century, Catawbans made names for themselves for their adaptations to the new industrial regimen. These Pioneers in Progress attracted national attention for their devotion to the preservation of a balance between the farm and the factory. Catawbans from all walks of life worked hard to make their county one of the exemplary places to live in North Carolina. George M. Yoder, the county chronicler, became a traditional weather prophet for all of North Carolina. Abel A. Shuford brought capital investment to Hickory, and through the efforts of his First National Bank in Hickory and the Shuford National Bank in Newton, fostered the growth of industrial firms. Fannie Ransom Williams worked tirelessly to honor the memory Catawba veterans at the annual Soldiers Reunion in Newton J. Watt Shuford and others set up the Catawba Creamery to market butter, eggs, and ice cream across the South. J. D. Elliott built city hall in Hickory and the new courthouse in Newton. North Carolina, Americana, American History, U. S. History, U.S.-iana, Family History, Genealogy. bxsli.
