Published by Woodlesford: Printed by Fred Leslie at the Cloverfield Press Woodlesford Yorkshire, 1899
Seller: Forest Books, ABA-ILAB, Grantham, LINCS, United Kingdom
Art / Print / Poster First Edition
First edition, 4to (255 x 195 mm), [146]pp., 16 hand-coloured plates, printed on a poor quality acid paper stock, front endpaper and frontispiece split along the gutter margin a loose, title page starting, other leaves firm but browned, bound in the original cloth-backed boards, lightly rubbed, printed red label on upper cover. An extremely rare privately printed work from the little known Clovefield Press, printed on the authors press at Cloverfield Villa, Woodleford, Yorkshire. The only other publication produced by the press was a 13 page pamphlet of children's fiction by Fred's 11 year old daughter Sybil, entitled 'Fairy Grove', 1898. Frederick Leslie's occupations include coal miner, sign-writer, lamplighter and school board attendance officer, before becoming a bookseller and amateur printer. May Sybil Leslie (1887 1937) "In 1909 Leslie was awarded an 1851 Exhibition scholarship which she used to travel to Paris to work with Marie Curie on the extraction of new elements from the products of the radioactive decay of thorium." (OXFORD DNB). The only other copy located is that of the Leeds Central Library, that copy being in very poor condition due to the acid paper.
