Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 164 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First British edition. The late author's final case for Detective Constable Brunt (The Quiet Stranger, 1985; etc.) is another of his finely crafted, psychologically acute police procedurals. In the early 1900's Walderslow village is isolated and provincial. Widower Horatio Brittlebank, local squire and landowner, shares his manor with reclusive housekeeper Charlotte Machin and spoiled, self-centered son Bernard, just home from Oxford and already the seducer of Mary Ann, daughter of Septimus and Ellen Durden, owners of run-down Slickensides farm and the old mine beneath it. Rumors of Bernard's departure for Canada, spread by a couple of strangers in the village; a reported break-in at the farm; and unexplained changes in the neighborhood's water-flow patterns lead Brunt to the discovery of Bernard's corpse in the old mine workings. The young man had a legion of enemies, so it takes all Brunt's patience and acumen to find the murderer and conjure up an unconventional justice. Believable characters, sound motivation, and solid evocation of time and place have been Hilton hallmarks. Slickensides is no exception. A fitting windup to a first-rate career in the British traditional genre. Condition: A near fine copy in like jacket.

Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The woman whose body was found down a south Wales coal mine was a stranger to those parts. She had come from the north-east in search of a missing husband, and with the help of an enquiry agent had found him. It did not take the local police long to put two and two together, especially when the husband confessed to the crime. But at the trial an able defense counsel tore the police evidence to ribbons and the case was thrown wide open once again, much to the relief of Inspector Crow, who had always distrusted the confession. What puzzled him was why it had ever been made. Condition: Jacket price chipped else a better than very good copy in a near fine jacket.

The book and jacket are in very good condition, minor shelf rubbing, text inside, apart from one instance of writing on first page, appears clean and clear throughout, illustrations remain vivid. 'The birds of the many islands of Fiji are varied, beautiful and sometimes very shy. W.J. Belcher has therefore done a great service by producing, as a result of long and patient study, a superb collection of paintings coverings most of the dominant species. These paintings are sensitively handles and accurate in detail, and nothing comparable has been done by any other artist. Unfortunately the paintings can not be placed on permanent view, so the permission to reproduce a selection in this book, given by the Trustees of the Fiji Museum, will be appreciated not only bey visitors to Fiji, but to bird lovers everywhere. The informative text is written by another enthusiast, Mr. R.B. Sibson, of Auckland. ' 56 pages. 7.75 x 10.75 inches. May require additional postage. Size: 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 190 pages. Octavo (8" x 5") bound in original; publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Takeover by a big American drug company spelt trouble for Coburn Pharmaceuticals, a small English outfit concentrating mainly on research. Personal tension between the English chairman and the American director responsible for security rose sharply when one or two rivals came out with similar products. Could the formulae have been leaked? The Coburn board called in industrial espionage experts Quarmby and Hood. While Quarmby worked outside, getting the history of employees and checking their references, Hood posed as a management consultant and worked inside. Being an unattached bachelor, he also worked on the attractive girl assigned to him as contact, but she blew inexplicably hot and cold. Hood narrowed the suspects down to four and identified an Italian drug house as the villain. And then the formula for a secret heart drug - the principal reason for the American takeover - disappeared, and with it an employee who was discovered to have forged references. The case seemed conclusively closed. But this proved to be only the first step in a round of wheeling-dealing which further divided the board. And then murder stepped in, and with it the police and a consequent inquiry into the firm's business. Quarmby and Hood had more than industrial espionage on their hands. Condition: Small tape repair to tear at back end paper. Jacket price clipped, spine ends and corners lightly chipped, some edge wear else a very good copy in like jacket.
