Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP; first editions are identified with the publisher Contemporary Books by the absence of any referenced additional printings (NAP) ). The book is flat-signed by Paul Newman on the front end paper. I live a few towns over from where Paul Newman had lived and in my collecting days was fortunate enough to come upon a few of his signed books. This one is in very nice condition. The beige covers are exceptionally clean. The green lettering on the spine is very bright and free of wear. There isn't any significant wear, just a little crinkling at and around the spine ends, and one tiny tan spot on the rear bottom edge. The cover edges and corners are in very nice shape, no rubbing anywhere. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. I don't see any soiling on any of them, none as well on the white inside covers and end papers. And I don't see any wear, no turned-down corners, no placeholder creases, no creasing of any kind. There are four pages of color photographs capturing Newman preparing a dinner, including sprinkling salt on a live chicken in his kitchen. Another four of him serving and consuming the dinner. And quite a few in black and white showing Mr. Newman and his good friend A. E. Hotchner horsing around in the spirit of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. All of the photographs are in excellent condition. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And Mr. Newman's signature represents the only writing to be found anywhere. The dust jacket is also very clean. I don't see any soiling. What appears to be toning on the front and rear is, in actuality, the way the jacket was produced. I know that because I have a couple of unsigned copies of this book. The jacket is in very nice condition. There are no tears. There is a little bit of crinkling at the spine ends, and a short, thin crease off the rear top edge. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. The flaps are in excellent condition. I have always had the jacket in a fitted protective cover. The book, of course, contains quite a few recipes. Mr. Newman and his friends appear to be quite happy with them. In addition, there are stories in Part III. Here are the titles: 'How P. L. Newman And A. E. Hotchner Became Food Tycoons (by A. E. Hotchner), a short humorous one by Newman titled P. L. Newman On The Origin Of His Spaghetti Sauce, also Hotchner's Lurid But True Account Of The Genesis Of Newman's Songfest At Hanratty's Bar & Grill, and Newman's Own Salad Dressing Song, and Newman's Spaghetti Duet With Joanne Woodward, and His Baritone Newman Mellifluously Raises To Sing His Popcorn's Old-Fashioned Praises, and finally The Pitfalls And Pratfalls Of Two Neophyte Philanthropists. Also included in the sale a separate 35 page softcover titled Newman's Own & Good Housekeeping Fifth Annual Recipe Contest which was held to benefit charity (this booklet is not related to the book with the connection simply being to Newman). Inside are recipes from people all over the United States. The winning recipe was Pasta Caesar with Portabellas. There are a number of runner-ups including Caesar Baked Shrimp, and Paul's Hustlin' Hummus with Caesar Pita Wedges, the latter submitted by a woman in Carlsbad, California known as The Cooking Babe. There is also the winning recipe from each of the Grand Prize Charity Award winners in 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994. Signed by Author(s).
