Only light scuffing of DJ; A bright, solid book, DJ in Mylar ; 1.34 x 9.29 x 6.06 Inches; 320 pages; -An incredible and unique insight into the life of Winston Churchill. Draws on previously unpublished, contemporary firsthand accounts of those who met him. Published in time for the 40th anniversary of Churchill's death "I play for high stakes and given an audience there is no act too daring and too noble." -Winston Churchill. Born to a privileged family, Winston Churchill was first a Conservative then a Liberal politician, a painter, a writer, Britain's greatest military leader, a prime minister, a Nobel Prize winner, and a proud father. But who was the real Winston Churchill? In this important book, Michael Paterson juxtaposes Churchill's prolific commentaries on himself with the opinions of those who knew him. From his dramatic escape as a prisoner of war in South Africa, his political career, his dark days following the Dardanelles failure and his resurgence as Britain's great wartime prime minister, this is a truly rounded portrait of one of the best-known public figures of recent history.

Photographs. 288 pages clean and tight. Revisiting an era brought to life with the vivid re-telling of events, this is a book written by the people who survived the war from their own homes and in their own workplaces. From the cities come stories of the bomb shelters and munitions factories; recollections of getting on with life when everything was in tatters. From the coasts and the countryside the Britons who worked to keep the nation fed and who took in the children of stangers when they were evacuated to safety, tell their story. Here too are tales of liasons with American Gls, and the relationship of the public with Italian PoWs. Voices from the Home Front offers a collection of viewpoints that will strike a chord of familiarity for all those that share these living memories. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the resilience of a nation at war, the humour and the strength that such times inspired even in the face of hardship and tragedy. Size: 8vo.

Hard Cloth Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Numerous Photographs (illustrator). First Edition. Dust jacket complete. Black cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. 224 pages clean and tight. During World War II the British Commandos and the United States Rangers brought the art of combined operations and of the sudden, lightning strike upon the enemy to a level of organisation never reached any previous war. But the Commandos and the Rangers were the inheritors of a long tradition; the history of strike forces made up of highly trained, highly professional crack troops is as old as that of war itself. In The Raiders Richard Garrett tells the stories of some of the most exciting of the raids carried out by these more-or-less irregular strike forces -- raids which have often had an effect upon the course of war out of all proportion to the numbers of men involved - and provides linking commentaries that put each raid in perspective and add up to a concise history of this little-studied branch of warfare. The stories range in time from the Peninsular War, and the remarkable exploits of a frigate's crew that held up the advance of an entire French army, to the 1970s and a special operation that used the most modern techniques and weaponry - the Israeli raid on Entebbe airport. In between we march with British troops who burned the White House in 1814, follow Canadian and British Commandos into the hell of Dieppe, take part in the D-day landings with the Rangers, and, in Vietnam, drop into a prisoner-of-war camp to rescue prisoners who were no longer there. This is a book that reveals the drama, horror and excitement of war at its moot personal as it traces the development of the military strategy that Winston Churchill memorably called `the butcher and bolt policy'. As gardens become increasingly smaller and overcrowded, indoor plants are playing a major part in gardening activities. But all too often houseplants occur in familiar shapes and sizes, the same flowers and foliage on window ledges in every other home. Worse, they are frequently in poor condition, hidden away in dark corners, exposed to excessive climatic changes or drowned by over-watering. Now Leslie Johns, with 25 years of growing houseplants behind him, and never less than 100 healthy plants flourishing in his Gloucestershire home, shows how to cultivate better houseplants, not merely sound ones, but those that glow and burst with well-being. Having grown plants in cities as well as in the country he knows how to cope with polluted atmospheres and places due importance on clean air, light and correct temperature. He discusses the normal range of world-wide commercially available houseplants but also deals with exotics such as simple orchids and bromeliads, and describes more unusual plants grown from pips, seeds and cuttings from kitchen fruit and vegetables. Many of the plants he has raised himself and here gives full details of their propogation methods which can be applied without the benefit of greenhouse or expensive equipment. Essentially practical, How to Grow Better Houseplants contains preventative and curative information on pets and diseases, and is illustrated throughout with photographs of individual plants, plus step by step sequences on propagation and planting gardens in glass containers.
