Hard cover dust wrapper, small quarto, 674pp plus 19pp listing of Pacific Linguistics publications. Very light wear to dust wrapper and board edges. Bookbinder's sticker bottom right of front pastedown. Otherwise near fine. At the time of publication this dictionary was the largest of an Austronesian language of Papua New Guinea. The language, originally only spoken by about 900 people in an area 30km south of Finschhafen on the coast of the Huon Peninsula, was adopted as a church language by the Lutheran Mission in the mid-1880s, and knowledge of it subsequently spread amongst the speakers of Austronesian languages of the Finschhafen-Lae-Morabe area. The dictionary gives a wealth of information on aspects of the old culture and traditions of the Jabem people which are no longer known to the present generations.
