Signed presentation from Battersby on the front endpaper: "To Marlene, Upon whose friendship I have never depended in vain. Accept this as a small token of a large gratitude. Jim." Marlene is believed to be Marlene Longenecker, who is mentioned in the Acknowledgements. Longenecker was an English professor at Ohio State University, where Battersby also taught. The book was purchased from a seller in the California area where Longenecker died, so presumably from her estate.
