Book First Edition
Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Printing. 256 pages. Dust jacket 3/8 inch tear at bottom front. The hero robot Solo returns. His mission: to rescue his mechanical twin, Nimrod. Safely ensconced in his jungle hideaway, Solo uplinks to the satellite network that circles the globe, and discovers an amazing fact. He's not alone. There's another one like him. Codenamed Nimrod, it has the same extraordinary physical and computer-reasoning abilities as Solo. In all senses but the biological, the two are brothers, bound by a tie they share with no other creature on earth. Determined not to repeat the mistakes they made with Solo and its humanistic education, the Army is conditioning Nimrod with electronically induced pain reinforcement. In fact, they've created a monster. Instead of the unquestioningly obedient robot it appears to be, Nimrod is a brilliant paranoid, with no moral core and the strength of thirty men. It is more than superhuman, and ultimately, it is uncontrollable. Leaving his sanctuary, Solo hitches a ride in the bilge compartment of a banana boat and arrives in New York where his satellite scans have told him a six-foot-two, three-hundred-pound, man-shaped machine covered in carbon fiber may pass unnoticed and prepares to rescue Nimrod. But the Pentagon knows Solo will not be able to resist the temptation of a soulmate, and using Nimrod as bait, it lures Solo into a trap meant to destroy the robot. As Solo strategizes his assault, Nimrod quietly begins to discover his power, and to plot his own violent revenge. The stage is set for the ultimate confrontation. Mason is the author of Vietnam helicopter story Chickenhawk.

A landmark of postmodern American fiction, Letters is "an old time epistolary novel by seven fictitious drolls & dreamers each of which imagines himself factual." Seven characters (including the Author himself) exchange a novel's worth of letters during a 7-month period in 1969, a time of revolution that recalls the U.S.'s first revolution in the 18th century - the heyday of the epistolary novel." The letters include a British gentlewoman who finds herself pregnant by her young American lover and a bachelor lawyer who enjoys incest on his final cruise in preparation for suicide. Letters take the reader on a journey through history.

Hatd Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Eva Wilson (illustrator). First Edition. Dust jacket complete, unclipped, slide fade to spine. . Red cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. Previous owner's ownership label on f. paste down. Frontis plate. Illustrated by Eva Wilson. 239 pages, appendices, chronology, bibliography, index. Clean and tight. The Roman Empire stretched from Scotland in the north to Africa in the south from Spain in the west to Syria in the cast. Within its borders lived very diverse peoples, with different backgrounds and different traditions. Yet, as Joan Liversidge shows in this book, the strong stamp of the central Roman administration influenced many aspects of their lives, and formed a very real link between them. In general the book deals with the late first and second centuries A.D., and Joan Liversidge draws much of her evidence for the'everyday lives of the Empire's inhabitants at this time from contemporary art, literature and inscriptions. The look is generously illustrated with reproductions of mosaics and statues, sculpture and frescoes, showing Roman citizens at home, at work and at play throughout the Empire. Material from every province has been used, much of it unfamiliar, and the result is a fresh arid memorable insight into the different ways in which people reacted to and adapted the Roman civilization. Joan Liversidge, Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College, is a Lecturer in the Department of Archaeology and Hon. Keeper of the Roman Collections in the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, University of Cambridge. The jacket picture is a detail from a mural painting found at Trier in West Germany showing labourers at work on a villa farm, second century A.D. Photograph by Herman Thornig, reproduced by courtesy of the Landesmuseum, Trier. Size: 8vo.
