Bebbington, David, 1949-. The nonconformist conscience: chapel and politics, 1870-1914. London ; Boston: George Allen & Unwin, 1982, x, 193pp., very good dust-jacket, very good black cloth, fresh copy, appears unused. Dust-jacket design by Ken Hamblin. CONTENTS: Nonconformists and their politics -- The quest for religious equality --The problems of society -- The free church council movement -- The Irish question -- The role of Britain in the world -- The education of the people -- The end of the conscience. -- The 'Nonconformist conscience was a major force in late Victorian and Edwardian politics. The well-attended chapels of England and Wales bred a race of Christian politicians who tried to exert a moral influence on public affairs. This book analyses the political impact of the Nonconformists at the peak of their strength. It will be essential reading for students of British history during the period and will also appeal to the wider public that takes an interest in the relation between religion and politics. Specialists in fields like foreign affairs and social policy will find here a clear evaluation of the changing views of Nonconformists about how governments should act. They were near the centre of key debates of the time over such matters as the growth of the British Empire and state provision of social services. They had also launched campaigns of their own to disestablish the Church of England and to secure public control of the nation s schools. Most of their efforts were channelled into the Liberal Party, whose history at this time cannot be understood without an appreciation of the distinctive enthusiasms of the Nonconformists, but their allegiance was severely tested by the Liberal policy of giving Home Rule to Ireland. Based on extensive original research, this study is the first to examine these themes. The author is a Nonconformist, and so has a particular sympathy for the religious tradition he discusses, but he is also a historian specialising in recent British history, and so is well able to subject its political activities to critical scrutiny. 9780049421738 ISBN 0049421735.

Slight staining to boards / inscription, foxing to edges. Good-plus in used and spine-faded dust-wrapper. Few gamekeepers "are better qualified than Norman Mursell, with fifty years experience behind him, to write about the arts of his profession - rearing the birds, dealing with vermin, exciting and dangerous encounters with poachers, working with dogs, and so on - but [this book] is much more than a gamekeeper's manual. It carries the unmistakeable authenticity of the countryman writing about the countryside he knows and loves, and painting a picture in which its wildlife, its farming, its customs, characters and crafts all take their place." .
