Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. ## The White Stallions of Vienna 1963 by Alois Podhajsky## ## THIS BOOK: This Book has been classified as VERY GOOD: This is the 1963 edition. First published in 1963. The dust jacket is full colour and in excellent condition, with a stallion up on its hind legs and jumping; the binding is brown linen with a white stallion embossed into the cover. This is a remarkable book and remarkable stable of these white stallions, and the horsemanship the riders display.## ## The Spanish Riding School is not merely the oldest in the world but is the only place where the art of classic horsemanship is taught. Foreigners flock to the beautiful baroque Riding Hall in Vienna to see the white Lipizzaner stallions with their riders in traditional costumes. The Stud's original home was Lipizza, from which the horses got their name. Founded in 1580 with Spanish stock (hence Spanish Riding School). After the 1914?18 War, when this territory was ceded to Italy, the Stud moved to Piber, then during the last War to Hostau, in Czechoslovakia. Colonel Alois Podhajsky has been Director of the School for more than a quarter of a century. During the final weeks of World War Il, when air raids threatened Vienna, he brought the horses and riders of the School, with their costly equipment, to the safety of St Martin, in Upper Austria, where they remained for ten years except when on tours abroad.## ## Colonel Podhajsky realized that unless the Stud was recovered before the advancing Russian army reached Hostau, it would be lost to Austria, and thus the School must ultimately close for lack of stock. After a performance given by the School, Colonel Podhajsky appealed to General George S. Patton, Jr, the United States Third Army commander, to take the School under his protection. General Patton agreed and sent troops to move the Stud, together with Lipizzaner belonging to Italy and Yugoslavia, out of Czechoslovakia to safety.## ## Since the School's return to Vienna in 1955, the foreign tours have ceased, but visitors to the City are still able to see the performance of the dancing white stallions there. They are considered of such cultural importance that they were featured in the first Telstar TV European broadcast to the United States. Walt Disney's magnificent film The Miracle of the White Stallions (British title, The Flight of the White Stallions), featuring Robert Taylor as Colonel Podhajsky, tells the story of the School and shows the performances in the splendidly redecorated Riding Hall.## ## Here in over 200 illustrations, is a unique record of the most famous Riding School in the world book to delight everyone who loves horses and the noble art of horsemanship.## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
