Perlman, Samuel, 1887-1958. Philip and Athens. Cambridge, New York: Heffer; Barnes & Noble Books, 1973, xiii, 222pp., good dust-jacket with chip at top of spine, very good green cloth BUT top foredge soiled. Views and controversies about classical antiquity. - Though the decline of the Greek city-state in the fourth century and the end of the Greek polis on the battlefield of Chaeronea have been among the favourite subjects of historical enquiry, there is still a fascination in the rise of Macedonian power and the establishment of Macedonian hegemony over Greece, and the subject continues to warrant renewed examination and reconsideration. The twelve essays reprinted in this volume bear on the main problems: the relations between Macedon and Greece during the reign of Philip II, his policies directed towards domination of Greece, and the reactions of the Greek city-states, especially of Athens and her leading politicians. Professor Perlman contributes a helpful background introduction, with notes, and a select classified bibliography for reference and further reading. - CONTENTS: - Acknowledgements page vi - Introduction by S.
