This book is a tribute to Jukka Siikala s contributions to anthropology by his colleagues and students and marks his 60th birthday in January 2007. By exploring the near, distant, inward and outward horizons towards which societies project their reality, the authors aim at developing a new, productive language for addressing culture as a way of experiencing and engaging the world.

The essays in this collection explore classical anthropological questions in modern sites, from Ghana to Karelia, from India to Italy, from Kuala Lumpur to St. Petersburg. They examine change and continuity through the lens of memory and sense of place, religious practice, migration and diaspora, social and politico-economic structures. Together these themes illustrate the resilience of culture in creating meaningful orders in people\'s lives and underline the importance of analysis of cultural difference in today\'s world.

In the book Industry and Modernism, the meaning of industrial production is discussed particularly in the context of the Nordic and Baltic postwar histories. The polarities of the Cold War suppressed similarities between the two worlds such as the shared belief in the power of architecture, planning and technology to construct new societies. For many western European countries, Nordic countries represented a model of the welfare state, just as Baltic countries were seen as models within the Soviet hegemony. In the book, economic and social history is integrated with business history, architectural history, and the study of industrial heritage.

Bibliotheca Historica 109\nDuring the late medieval period the Visitation became a familiar subject in works of art. Gradually the story of the meeting between the Virgin Mary and Elisabeth emerged as the focus of devotional practices that culminated in the introduction of a new liturgical feast of the Visitation in 1389. In this study some important paintings of the Visitation are analysed in separate case studies. The altarpieces of the Visitation produced towards the end of the fifteenth century highlight the religious and social importance of a cult of the Visitation in late fifteenth-century Florence. The roots of this cult can be traced back to late medieval spirituality originating in the environment of Dominican convents. As a Christian mystery the Visitation focused on the pregnancy of the Virgin and the blessing of John the Baptist in his mother\'s womb.\n.

Drawing on his research on the Asante people of Ghana, West Africa, Timo Kallinen explores how the colonial and postcolonial states have attempted to secularize the sacred institutions of chiefship and kingship, a process which is by no means complete. Furthermore, it has frequently proved a problematic undertaking with regards to a number of burning issues in contemporary Ghanaian society, such as Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, nationalism, international development aid, civil society participation, coup d'états, and witchcraft.

Literacy Skills as Local Intangible Capital studies the grey area of the success story of rural lending libraries in the Nordic countries through the activities of people s libraries in one area of Central Finland, in the parish of Kivijärvi and its neighbouring parishes. The study explores the influence of social, cultural, geographical and economic phenomena on the reading habits of the local population, and reveals interesting reasons why the establishment of elementary schools and popular libraries did not automatically increase the informational capital of the common people of remote regions or lead to their social advancement. The combination of collective biographical and transnational comparative methods with rarely utilized original sources is innovative and has not been used before in Finnish historical research on functional literacy and popular libraries. It represents a methodological experiment in describing the life history of people s library.
