PREFATORY NOTE THE pinewood room from Haynes Grange, Bedfordshire, was generously presented to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1928 by a body of subscribers with the aid of a contribution from the National Art-Collections Fund; it has been erected in the Octagon Court of the Museum. The following history and description has been written by Mr. H. Clifford Smith, F.S.A., Deputy Keeper of the Department of Woodwork; to whose personal interest and efforts the acquisition of the room was largely due. He wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to His Grace the Duke of Bedford, K.G., for permission to publish the original drawing of Houghton House; to Miss Scott-Thomson, Archivist at Welbeck Abbey, for information regard-ing its history; to Mr. W. N. Henman, Hon. Secretary to the Bedford Natural History and Archaeological Society, for information dealing with Houghton House and its connexion with John Bunyan; and to the Ancient Monuments Branch of H.M. Office of Works for information concerning the present ruins of Houghton. Special thanks are also due to Mr. H. J. Harding, A.R.I.B.A., of the Royal College of Art, for his technical assistance, and for the important contri-bution which elucidates the source of the design of the room; to Sir Arthur Hill, C.M.G., F.R.S., the Director, and to Mr. W. Dallimore, Keeper of Museums of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for help in identifying the origin of the pinewood employed; to the Royal Institute of British Architects for permission to reproduce the original drawing by Inigo Jones for the west front of St. Paul's Cathedral; and above all to Professor A. E. Richardson, F.S.A., F.R.I.B.A., Professor of Architecture at University College, London, who closely associated himself with the acquisition of the room by the Museum, for his assistance in collecting evidence in support of the hypothesis that it came to Haynes Grange from Houghton House. June, 1935. ERIC MACLAGAN.
