Synopsis from inside DJ leaf: ''The history of aviation has for long lacked a systematic directory of the world's first aeroplanes, and a convenient nomenclature for them. The present work provides such a compilation, embracing every man-carrying powered machine which rose from the ground from 1809 to August 1909 along with the historically more important gliders; that is to say from Sir George Cayley's first full-size glider, through a century of aviation development, up to the Reims meeting of August, 1909, when the powered aeroplane came of age and was accepted in the world as a practical vehicle. The aircraft are first grouped under their creators, who are named in alphabetical order. There then follows a chronological list of man-carrying gliders, kites and powered aeroplanes in order of their first take-off, a list of aero-engines and the aeroplanes they powered, and one of surviving aircraft and engines. The volume concludes with appendices, providing descriptions of the first aerodromes, aviation meetings, etc. and brief conversion tables for British and metric measurements.''.
