Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Science touches all of our lives, every day, and should be a constant source of wonder and fascination not something confined to the classroom. This book is for anybody who feels curious about ideas in science but lacks a strong background in the subject. Getting to Grips with Science draws on the author's twelve years of experience in leading experimental discussion groups, where people from all walks of life come together to pose questions in the presence of a science teacher. Bursting with testimonials from real people about their everyday experiences of science, the book acts as a gentle introduction for anyone wishing to find out more about the natural world. Drawing on practical examples and discussions that range from hormones to tectonic plates, it helps the reader understand any difficulties they may have encountered with science learning in the past and points to fresh ways of approaching the subject in the future.Concentrating on the themes that non-scientists are genuinely curious about, the book illustrates how we can begin to explore scientific ideas, first through our initial understanding of the world around us and then with the help of a trained tutor who explains the underlying scientific concepts. For those wishing to make a start on exploring science afresh, the book offers practical information about the books, museums, websites, podcasts, courses and events available to support them. Wider reflection on the experience of adults engaging with science through these discussion groups offers food for thought on the nature of science education in general.Andrew Morris has been running science discussion groups in informal settings in central London since 2002. Originally a science teacher in sixth-form, further and adult education, he has also worked as a senior manager in colleges and national bodies concerned with educational research. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Good. Slow Light is a popular treatment of today's astonishing breakthroughs in the science of light. Even though we don't understand light's quantum mysteries, we can slow it to a stop and speed it up beyond its Einsteinian speed limit, 186,000 miles/sec; use it for quantum telecommunications; teleport it; manipulate it to create invisibility; and perhaps generate hydrogen fusion power with it. All this is lucidly presented for non-scientists who wonder about teleportation, Harry Potter invisibility cloaks, and other fantastic outcomes. Slow Light shows how the real science and the fantasy inspire each other, and projects light's incredible future.Emory physicist Sidney Perkowitz discusses how we are harnessing the mysteries of light into technologies like lasers and fiber optics that are transforming our daily lives. Science-fiction fantasies like Harry Potter's invisibility cloak are turning into real possibilities. Please click here for more info. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. Paperback. Condition: Good. In July 2007, the then chief executive of Citigroup, Charles Prince, captured the hubris of a market dangerously addicted to debt: When the music stops, in terms of liquidity, things will be complicated. But as long as music is playing, you have got to get up and dance. We're still dancing. By the end of the year, Mr Prince was forced to resign along with some of the most influential bankers on Wall Street. Global investment houses in the United States and Europe were forced to turn to sovereign wealth funds for emergency funding. Their rescue comes at a significant material and reputational price. This book investigates the origins and implications of the securitization crisis, described by the chief executive of ANZ as a financial services bloodbath. Based on extensive interviews, it offers an integrated series of case studies drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. A central purpose is to not only chart what went wrong within the investment houses and why the regulatory systems failed, but also provide policy guidance. The book therefore combines the empirical with the normative. In so doing, it provides a route map to navigate one of the most significant financial and regulatory failures in modern times. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Impossible Minds: My Neurons, My Consciousness has been written to satisfy the curiosity each and every one of us has about our own consciousness. It takes the view that the neurons in our heads are the source of consciousness and attempts to explain how this happens. Although it talks of neural networks, it explains what they are and what they do, in such a way that anyone may understand. This book is also a story. A story of a land where people think that they are automata without much in the way of consciousness, a story of cormorants and cliffs by the sea, a story of what it might be like to be a conscious machine. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Between 1941 and 1945 as many as 70,000 inmates died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northwestern Germany. The exact number will never be known. A large number of these deaths were caused by malnutrition and disease, mainly typhus, shortly before and after liberation. It was at this time, in April of 1945, that Michael Hargrave answered a notice at the Westminster Hospital Medical School for volunteers. On the day of his departure the 21-year-old learned that he was being sent to Bergen-Belsen, liberated only two weeks before. This firsthand account, a diary written for his mother, details Michael's month-long experience at the camp. He compassionately relates the horrendous living conditions suffered by the prisoners, describing the sickness and disease he encountered and his desperate, often fruitless, struggle to save as many lives as possible. Amidst immeasurable horrors, his descriptions of the banalities of everyday life and diagrams of the camp's layout take on a new poignancy, while anatomic line drawings detail the medical conditions and his efforts to treat them. Original newspaper cuttings and photographs of the camp, many previously unpublished, add a further layer of texture to the endeavors of an inexperienced medical student faced with extreme human suffering. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This book will explain how group theory underpins some of the key features of particle physics. It will examine symmetries and conservation laws in quantum mechanics and relate these to groups of transformations. Group theory provides the language for describing how particles (and in particular, their quantum numbers) combine. This provides understanding of hadronic physics as well as physics beyond the Standard Model. The symmetries of the Standard Model associated with the Electroweak and Strong (QCD) forces are described by the groups U(1), SU(2) and SU(3). The properties of these groups are examined and the relevance to particle physics is discussed.Stephen Haywood, author of Symmetries And Conservation Laws In Particle Physics, explains how his book can help experimental physicists and PhD students understand group theory and particle physics in our new video! The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Fine. New Edition: Understanding Voltammetry (3rd Edition)The power of electrochemical measurements in respect of thermodynamics, kinetics and analysis is widely recognized but the subject can be unpredictable to the novice even if they have a strong physical and chemical background, especially if they wish to pursue the study of quantitative measurements further. Accordingly, some significant experiments are perhaps wisely never attempted while the literature is sadly replete with flawed attempts at rigorous voltammetry. This textbook considers how to go about designing, explaining and interpreting experiments centered around various forms of voltammetry (cyclic, microelectrode, hydrodynamic, etc.). The reader is assumed to have attained a knowledge equivalent to Master's level of physical chemistry but no exposure to electrochemistry in general, or voltammetry in particular. While the book is designed to stand alone, references to important research papers are given to provide an introductory entry into the literature. In comparison to the first edition, two new chapters transport via migration and nanoelectrochemistry are added. Minor changes and updates are also made throughout the textbook to facilitate enhanced understanding and greater clarity of exposition.

The text explains the workings of the normal kidney, illustrates the aetiology and pathophysiology of acute renal disease, and provides practical treatment guidelines relevant to the day-to-day needs of the practising clinician. There is a clear emphasis on the underlying pathogenic mechanisms naturally leading to an understanding of the rationale behind the recommended treatments. Each chapter is illustrated throughout by coloured tables and diagrams, and incorporates unique easy-to-follow "practice points" algorithms which detail, step-by-step, the precise treatment protocols required to succeed in caring for these complex patients. An entire section is dedicated to dealing with patients who develop acute renal failure in specific hospital settings, such as the labour ward or intensive care unit. Doctors working in a wide range of acute medical specialities frequently encounter patients with acute renal failure and should find this a useful clinical handbook.
