Book
Soft Covers. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Map (illustrator). 1st. Banaba Island lies to the north of the Solomon Islands , one of a group formerly known as the Ocean Islands. According to the editors the Banabans of historic times (more that 1000 years ago) had created a prosperous, self-supporting and happy society living in harnony with its envoronment. In the early 1900s, in colonial times, Banaba was target for the phosphate miners. The small island quickly became devestated, a situation not helped by Japanese occupation in WWII. Eventually, with the island unable to sustain its residents, they were relocated to a Fijiian Island of Rabi. By then much of the history, culture and traditions of the original Banabans was lost. This book was "prepared to provide trhe present and future generations of Rabi islanders with all that has been recorded of their former way of life on Banaba." The book is based on the papers of the editors, those of Sir Arthur Grimble and published works. This a little used ex-library copy, first edition of 1994, 124 pages including bibliography, nine b/w photos, map. Pictorial card covers are sheathed with clear protective plastic, crossed bar-code lower front, small label at spine base, library stamp top corner inside front cover, issue sheet tipped in to title page, with codes label beneath, library stamp top edge first page of text, no other library markings through text block, which is otherwise NF, library stamp lower edge inside back cover, small library stamps upper/vertical page edges as closed. Note:The text block consists neatly formated computer generated script. A scarce book.

Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. xiv, 267 pages : illustrations, maps ; 21 cm. Summary:". The aim of the publication has been to present various facets of Rotuma's culture and the changes faced by the Rotuman people today. With three exceptions, the authors are all Rotuman, telling their own tales of Rotuma's uniqueness in depth for the first time. They relate aspects of Rotuma's geography and history as well as the influence of the missions and colonial attempts to govern land tenure. The marriage and mamasa ceremonies are described in detail, and the different dance forms and certain chants. A major section focuses on the network of kinship links which forms the basis of Rotuma's social and political system. Almost all of the authors are concerned indirectly with the process of change affecting Rotuman society, and three chapters describe the physical manifestation of this: the emigration of Rotumans to Fiji, the need for childen to leave the island for higher education, and the communities established away from home ." -- Foreword p. ix.
