Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Ian Fraser Kilmister (24 December 1945 28 December 2015) known to the world as Lemmy was more than just the driving force of Motorhead. Renowned for his skills as a raconteur and philosopher, he was first and foremost a musician and innovator whose love of music led to his involvement in numerous projects beyond the scope of the band he formed in 1975. Hawkwind and Motorhead fan Alan Burridge had the idea to produce a fanzine about Motorhead in the summer of 1979. A few months later he encountered Lemmy, Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Animal Taylor four times on the 'Bomber' tour and the resulting interviews and gig reviews formed the basis of the first 'Motorheadbangers' fanzine in January 1980. Three years later Lemmy asked Alan to integrate the fanzine with the 'Motorheadbangers' fan club which had until then been organised by Phil's sister Helen and their father John. Alan took this on and has run it to the present day, with over 100 'Motorheadbangers' fanzines to his credit. In addition, he has also written several other books about his beloved Motorhead.Wholly immersed in all things related to Motorhead, Alan began listing and hunting down all of Lemmys extra-curricular activities. In 'Collateral Damage' he focuses the spotlight on the bands and projects in Lemmys life, before and parallel to Motorhead, cataloguing his appearances on film, TV, album tracks, singles and downloads. Given Lemmy's sad passing on December 28th 2015 'Collateral Damage' is a true celebration of life beyond Motorhead. The book does contain a handwritten foreword by Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead's last ever live appearance in Berlin, Germany, on December 11th 2015. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Launched on its true path with the release of Dont Touch Me There by Tygers of Pan Tang at the end of 1979 Neat Records was arguably the most influential and innovative heavy metal label of the early Eighties. Irrevocably tied in with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, the Tyne & Wear-based independent embodied the genre like no other label. Acclaimed for its releases and derided by its critics for trying to take on the major record labels at their own game, Neat Records did more to further the cause of heavy metal at the time of the NWOBHM than any other label, and in launching the careers of Raven and Venom it was instrumental in the splintering of what was then just heavy metal into speed metal, thrash metal and death metal, subgenres which soon developed a life of their own and changed the face of the metal scene forever; furthermore, a number of its other discoveries like Heavy Pettin', Tobruk and, of course, the Tygers themselves, would go on to sign to major labels with varying degrees of success. This book examines the label, its bands and their releases though both new interviews with many key players in the Neat Records' story such as label boss David Wood and producer Steve Thompson, and Ravens John Gallagher and Jeff 'Mantas' Dunn from Venom, as well as contemporary articles and reviews. Already spending all his pocket money and school dinner money on records, John Tucker became hooked on Neat as soon as he came across Dont Touch Me There. A few years later he started writing the labels promotional magazine Lead Weight, and then once the Neat catalogue had been sold to Sanctuary Records he worked on a number of CD re-issues of classic Neat material. His first book "Suzie Smiled: The New Wave of British Heavy Metal" was greeted with many great reviews ("immersed in the scene himself as a fanzine writer, photographer and indeed failed musician, John Tucker provides a fascinating and humorous worm's eye view of one of the most important periods in heavy metal history" said Kerrang! in 2008) and since then he has collaborated with Saxons Biff Byford and Diamond Heads Brian Tatler -- two luminaries of the period -- on their autobiographies. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Al Atkins is the former lead singer and founder of the multi-million selling British metal band Judas Priest. But where and when did it all begin? During the sixties when the highly lauded Brum Beat era produced bands such as The Move, Atkins played in various semi-pro outfits. It was in 1969 that Atkins decided to have a go at forming yet another band with his childhood friend Bruno Stapenhill. The band in question was JUDAS PRIEST. Priest quickly built up a reputation in the Midlands as a powerful live act and even secured a record deal with Immediate, which was owned by ex-Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Atkins even recorded the very first Judas Priest demo: "Good Time Woman" and "We'll Stay Together". Unfortunately, Immediate folded and so did Priest. Undeterred, Atkins resurrected Priest with another line-up in 1970 with guitarist K K Downing and bassist Ian Hill. In '71 they made a 7" single acetate: "Holy is the Man" and "Mind Conception". Through the early seventies Priest supported many bands including Slade, Status Quo and Black Sabbath. A revolving line-up continued until May 1973 when Atkins finally decided to call it a day.His memoirs contain very rare archive photos and memorabilia from Judas Priest's past circa 1969-1973. Also included are interviews with various members of Priest's history. Atkins is the co-writer of several Priest songs which are included on the band's first two albums "Rocka Rolla" and "Sad Wings of Destiny" both of which eventually went Gold. Atkins co-penned the heavy metal classic "Victim of Changes". With a foreword by Judas Priest bassist Ian Hill, "Dawn of the Metal Gods" is not just a book for Judas Priest fans but a bible for all those wishing to form a band in the tumultuous world of heavy metal. Al Atkins is the former lead singer and founder of the multi-million selling British metal band Judas Priest. This book is suitable for those wishing to form a band in the tumultuous world of heavy metal. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book tackles the history of Germanys Noise Records, the most influential European independent heavy metal record company of the 1980s. The creation of Karl-Ulrich Walterbach, Noise was responsible for signing and developing the likes of Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Coroner, Gamma Ray, Grave Digger, Helloween, Kreator, Running Wild, Skyclad, Tankard, and many more, assembling a roster whose impact reverberates throughout the metal scene today. For the first time, Walterbach goes into elaborate detail on his experiences in the music industry. A self-proclaimed anarchist with no musical background to speak of, Walterbach rose from the violent Berlin punk rock scene to the forefront of European metal after launching Noise in 1983. Walterbachs gut instinct for signing new talent made him one of metals first true label impresarios, but his abrasive personality and unwillingness to conform to industry standards made him an outsider in a business he grew to despise. The book takes the reader through Walterbachs early days of getting Noise off the ground, as the metal scene rallied around black/death metal progenitors Celtic Frost, power metal torchbearers Helloween, and Teutonic thrash upstarts Kreator. The book chronicles Walterbachs A&R triumphs and failures, frustrating experiences with the eras major labels, and the social climate of running a record company stationed 15 minutes away from the Berlin Wall. And, it contains Walterbachs no-holds-barred commentary on the bands and industry counterparts he did business with during his time running Noise until 2001. However, a one-sided book this is not. Hellhammer/Celtic Frost leader Tom G Warrior and his band mates reflect on their humble Swiss countryside beginnings, where they worked diligently to change the face of underground extreme metal. Yet even though Celtic Frost was Noises first breakout band, they were met with regular opposition from Walterbach. With over 75 exclusive interviews from every main Noise band member, manager, and industry personality, along with countless never-before-seen photographs, the book provides a thorough, balanced look into a record company that helped establish mainland Europe as a global force in metal. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Axel Hermann was an art student with a Kiss fixation living in Dortmund until a meeting with Robert Kampf -- who had just formed his own record label Century Media -- catapulted him into the world of album cover illustration. Starting his career as the in-house artist at Century Media in the second-half of the Eighties Hermann has become a highly-respected and much-in-demand freelance illustrator, and has worked with the likes of Sodom, Iced Earth and Edguy as well as more underground acts including Asphyx, Morgoth and Unleashed. In this, his first collection, Hermann pulls together the cream of his first quarter-century in the business, and with the help of some of the bands hes worked with he explains at various times the thinking, the process and/or the objective behind each cover design. Expressive, provocative and challenging Hermanns artwork is calibrated to shock -- at a number of levels -- and awe in equal measures, and even now he works hard at expanding both his horizons and his technique. It is little wonder that he is as exciting now as he was when he delivered his first album cover (for Poltergeists debut album "Depression") back in 1989.
