Women and some men were accused, examined, tried and in many cases executed ~ innocent people sacrificed to public suspicion, fear and superstition. The Witches of Salem is an account of that tragedy. Compiled almost 200 years later from original documentation, including transcripts of the trials themselves, this volume presents a complete overview of the Salem incidents, with the benefit of nineteenth~century hindsight. Through the eyes of Winfield S. Nevins, it is apparent that the Salem settlers were poised for "the witchcraft delusion." For hundreds of years, the English hanged or burned their "witches," acts sanctified and encouraged by the church. Similar executions occurred all over Europe, supported by the Inquisition. While it may be difficult to identify with a society in which relations with the Devil were considered not only possible, but a fact of life, some characteristics of the Salem trials bear an unnerving resemblance to the child abuse cases of today: most accusers were adolescent or pre~adolescent the accusations of one child provided enough evidence to precipitate an examination the testimony of a few children proved the guilt of the "witch," despite contrary avowals of the accused. Viewing books as the media of the seventeenth century, one may draw other parallels between the events surrounding Salem's trials and issues of today. "Educational" witchcraft books found their way into Salem's households and, undoubtedly, into the hands of Salem's children, similar to the accessibility of adult media to today's children. The children were most certainly molded by this exposure. Black Masses, night flights and liaisons with the Devil were described vividly in the subsequent trials. All manner of possession and abuse by invisible hands were acted out, much as today's youth mimics behavior observed on television. As a shocking history or a tool for insight into current issues, The Witches of Salem provides riveting reading.
