Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. As a boy, Herman Williams, Jr., and his family fled Harlem in the middle of the night when the infamous riots erupted. But that was only the first in a number of hardships that he would have to endure throughout his extraordinary life.Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, Williams encountered racism and ignorance on a continual basis, but it really hit home when, as one of the first black streetcar operators in the city, he was subjected to humiliating verbal and physical abuse by passengers and members of the public.A few years later, after joining the Baltimore Fire Department, Williams worked side-by-side (risking life and limb) with the same firemen who refused to let him eat at the same table with them. Yet, he refused to give up, struggling through 40 years of discrimination and staggering obstacles to become the first African-American fire chief of a major U.S. city.By the time Williams retired in 2000, he had been at the helm of the fire department for eight years. During that time, he was instrumental in the giveaway of 70,000 smoke detectors to city residents, an act that is credited with reducing the number of fires in the city by more than half in 1999. During Williams's tenure, the city of Baltimore also set record lows in the number of fire deaths.A richly portrayed tale of heroism, family devotion, and personal triumph, Firefighter is a fascinating and motivational story about a man who refuses to accept anything short of his dreams.(less)Hardcover, 320 pagesPublished February 1st 2002 by Mountain MoversMore Details.edit detailsGet a copy:KoboOnline Stores ?Librariessponsored books 291 pages. Red-brown morocco leather spine with gilt title; specially block-printed oriental paper sides, and matching slipcase by Gray Parrot, Easthampton, with binder s label in back of book. Black paper of slipcase sides shows a little rubbing with loss of some of the black surface (note: the black surface of this "mulberry" paper easily stains the fingers & can be as easily transferred to the pages of this book); some age-related tanning to some pages of text; overall, a fine copy. Scan shows the spine & part of the front cover. [Colophon:] Here ends the monograph relating to my visits to Yen-Thai and Lang-Buoi, the ancient paper villages of Tonkin, Indo-China. The paper used in printing this edition was made in 1932 in my mill at Lime Rock, Connecticut, the only handmade paper mill in America. The title-page device was printed from a woodcut found in Tonkin; the typographical ornaments used as chapter headings, as well as the borders, were cut and cast especially for this book by Dard Hunter, Junior; the woodblock used in printing the cover paper was procured in China. This edition, as well as all of the preceding books from my own press, has been bound by [Gray Parrot] Peter Franck, Sherman, Connecticut. Owing to the small amount of paper available for the printing of this book, and the limited number of specimens, only one hundred and eighty-two copies could be printed, any more than this number would have been impossible. Hunter, Dard (illustrator). Quarto. 111pp., + (11)ff. of paper samples. One of 200 copies. With a tipped-in frontispiece showing Hunter's mill. Begun in late February 1922, this title is the first to be designed, written, and printed at the Mountain House Press and is Hunter's first work on the subject of papermaking. This history deals with the making of paper, the evolution of printing, tools and techniques used, and the advent and evolution of watermarks, written by an expert in the field and a leader in the revival of hand papermaking. Illustrated throughout with engravings and line drawings showing the implements and practices in making paper. Includes numerous tipped-in examples of papers and watermarks, many reproduced from items in the author's private collection, including specimens made by Hodgkinson and Company, the Doves Paper Mill, the James Willcox Mill and by Hunter himself. Dard Hunter II notes that tipped-in items were affixed with rubber cement, causing them to detach soon after publication. The 90 illustrations include 55 printed in the text in black & white, ten printed in color on Marlborough paper, five printed in color on text paper, four on Japanese vellum, one half-tone on Japanese paper, and eight photographs. The printing of the plates required three months, while the text required approximately a year. The book was finally completed in April of 1923 and was chosen by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as one of the fifty best books for that year. It was selected again in 1937 in Paul Bennett's booklet "Thirty-seven of the Finest Books of Our Time." Bound in half white paper with marble paper over boards. A very fine, bright copy that retains its exceedingly rare glassine dust wrapper and original box. Laid in is the bookplate of Mrs. J. R. Taylor. (The Life Work of Dard Hunter pp.87-89.).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 79, [3] pp. (text) plus 9 photogravures (including frontispiece), 2 collotypes, and 50 tipped-in specimens, prints, etc.; 4to, quarter red leather, vellum tips, sides of persimmon juice-dyed Japanese paper with a design printed from an early Chinese woodblock of a five-clawed dragon; gilt spine title, original slipcase. The book, together with its slipcase, are housed in a modern red cloth-covered clamshell box with leather label and gilt title. Text paper is Japanese handmade "Shogun" heavyweight made from the mulberry tree's inner bark. "Chinese Ceremonial Paper" records some of the fruits of Dard Hunter's research on one aspect of paper use during his extended trip to Asia in 1935. The numerous paper specimens (several foldout) include "spirit papers" to be burned at the funeral for use by the deceased in the afterlife. "Much of this 'money' was a coarse bamboo paper, onto which was pasted a small piece of extremely thin tin foil. Further treatments included a coating of seaweed, which turned the silver-color of the foil to gold, and sometimes a woodcut design was overprinted" (Baker, By His Own Labor, p. 141). A complex production in tipping in and binding these often quite fragile specimens. Prospectus laid in. Number 67 of 125 copies; signed by Hunter on the limitation page. A lovely, very well-preserved copy of the book, usual occasional offsetting from some specimens; slipcase has mild fading to some edges and light wear to one; clamshell box is fine. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Hardcover. Number 122 of 125 copies signed and numbered by the author. Dard Hunter (1883-1966) is considered by many to be the father of hand papermaking in the United States. Hunter traveled extensively around the world, learning about papermaking and collecting artifacts related to the topic. He wrote several books on hand papermaking traditions, and also studied other paper-like materials such as papyrus and amatl. From the colophon: "The book was printed at the Mountain House Press on paper made by hand in the Orient. The specimens included with each book were gathered by the compiler during journeys in China, as well as in Indochina, Java, Sumatra, Siam, Malay Peninsula, and other Asiatic countries where the Chinese have emigrated and where their ancient customs have been retained. Due to the hand methods used in the making of this volume and to the limited number of original specimens available, only 125 copies have been printed." With 16 illustrations and 50 samples of ceremonial paper and items made from paper, including trays for sacrificial burning, ceremonial paper money, envelopes, etc. There are eight photogravures of the papermaking process and two folding illustrations, plus two folding pages that protect larger sheets of paper. This is one of Hunter's more elaborate publications. It is also noteworthy that most of the focus is on the uses of paper in ritual, the cultural meanings of paper, if you will, not simply the mechanics of papermaking, as some of his other books are [From a contemporary review]. Bound in quarter black leather with russet colored cloth covers with an elegant design in gold. Gilt titling to spine. Very light wear to covers. Interior pages are beautiful, and the specimens and samples are in fine condition save for a few pieces with some offsetting, which is usually seen in copies of this book. Housed in a brown paper covered slipcase with some fading and wear. A very desirable copy of one of Dard Hunter's most important works in about fine condition. Quarto. 84 pages plus the unnumbered pages with specimens. PRI/083123.

Condition: Near Fine. Number 175 of 200 copies signed and numbered by Dard Hunter. He states on the limitation page that owing to the methods used in producing this book the edition is necessarily limited. This is a scarce groundbreaking early work by Hunter. Dard Hunter (1883-1966) is considered by many to be the father of hand papermaking in the United States. Hunter travelled extensively around the world, learning about papermaking and collecting artifacts related to the topic. He wrote several books on hand papermaking traditions, and also studied other paper-like materials such as papyrus and amatl. Primitive Papermaking was Dard Hunter's first book on international, non-Western papermaking. Most of this volume concerns the production of tapa [bark cloth] in the Pacific and in Southeast Asia. Hunter made the case that although usually termed â bark-cloth' by Westerners, this material, made by beating the fibers of the inner barks of trees, is actually paper. The first explorers to encounter this material termed it "cloth" primarily because of its uses, not because of its construction. Hunter spent years acquiring the samples of tapa, many of which were quite old. Hunter noted the affinity of "silverfish" for tapa. Thus, older pieces do not survive well in their tropical places of origin. The craft had already disappeared in places Hunter visited in the first quarter of the 20th century, although he was able to obtain historical samples [University of Utah exhibition on paper through the centuries]. Hunter traveled to the South Seas, including Tahiti, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Hawaii, in addition to Mexico and parts of South America. He collected bark and bark paper specimens every where he traveled, and carefully studied and documented the techniques and methods used by the papermakers in each location. Printed with Hunter's own hand-cut and hand-cast type, with the statement in the preface: "The punches, matrices, moulds, and tools which were employed in the making of this type are now in the Smithsonian institution and after the cessation of my publishing the type itself will be destroyed." The book has photographs, illustrations of tools and techniques, facsimiles where original specimens were not available, two bark specimens and 31 bark paper specimens. Occasional light offsetting from specimens and very light browning to some page edges. With untrimmed loose bifold sheets as issued, and housed in the original paper portfolio with cloth spine and corners, printed paper cover label, and three sets of ribbon ties. Light bumping to corners. With 47 numbered pages and 56 unnumbered pages with the specimens. In very good plus to near fine condition. Folio volume measuring 12 x 17 inches. PRI/091123.

First edition, Copy No. 95 of 200 signed and numbered by Dard Hunter. Photogravure frontispiece, 48pp. of text & [27] pp. of mounted specimen leaves, bark samples, photographs, etc. 1 vols. Folio. William Joseph "Dard" Hunter was an American authority on printing, paper, and papermaking -- he was particularly focused on hand-made paper and traditional Western and non-Western papermaking. He learned extensively about the history of papermaking around the world, and applied the skills he acquired to make his own paper at a paper mill he owned. In the winters, when the paper mill could not be operated, he cut his own type. Several of his books were printed at his own press: this is one of them. This volume was Hunter's first on non-Western papermaking, and focuses largely on the production of 'tapa' in the Pacific and in Southeast Asia. 'tapa' is often referred to as bark-cloth by Western explorers and observers, but the process of making it most closely resembles the Western process of creating paper, as it is produced by beating the fibers of the inner barks of trees into sheets. The craft Hunter observed had already disappeared in many places Hunter visited in the early twentieth-century, and some of the samples included were old at the time of the book's production. Hunter gathered the materials for this painstakingly produced book over a period of ten years, with specimens from Tahiti, the Cook Islands, the Fiji Islands, Tonga, Hawaii, and Mexico. A magnificent book, genuinely rare and desirable. Ransom Check List 5 Loosely laid in the original portfolio of linen and boards, printed paper label on upper cover. Volume I contains numerous specimen woodcuts, title pages, advertisements, letterheads, and color photographs tipped or bound in, all showing various aspects of Hunter's non-papermaking work, including enamel, stained glass, and his work at the Roycrofters. Volume II concerns Hunter's independent papermaking career, with similar items, plus 23 full-page paper specimens, proof sheets, and pamphlets from Hunter's book productions. Pages are deckle-edged. These two volumes were the labor of eleven years for Dard Hunter II and stand as the most definitive and touching monument to his father's work. Extremely fine, bound in three-quarter leather, with cover paper designed using a motif of green and pink leaves characteristic of Hunter's drawings. [BAKER 276; HUNTER 71]. "The Literature of Papermaking" was the first of Hunter's sumptuous folios on the history and art of papermaking, which, according to Baker, was bound in "three quarter natural linen fabric" by Franck. The present volume deviates splendidly from that description and conforms to only two copies mentioned in Baker's biography of Hunter "By His Own Labor": "in fact, the only known fine bindings that Franck did on "The Literature of Papermaking" were for his and Hunter's personal copies. Hunter's copy is beautifully bound in full vellum with the title, author, and date of issue on the spine, as well as the title and printer's mark in the front cover" Presumably this copy, No. 171, is Franck's own and a sibling copy to Hunter's. At the time of publication only 180 copies had been sold and it stands to reason that Franck would have bound his and Hunter's personal copies amongst the later numberings, no less because this copy was not bound with the photogravure frontispiece of Dard Hunter's Mill (perhaps to offset the aesthetic and financial indulgence of their own copies). [BAKER 113]. NEAR FINE in Fine clamshell case. Shows the handsome bookplate of book collector Estelle Doheny at the front paste-down, several pages with light natural off-set, else Fine.
