Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The turbulent seas off the coast of North East England can be treacherous, often buffeted by tremendous gales. Over the centuries countless ships have come to grief on the notorious rocks and sandbars at the mouth of the Tyne. By the eighteenth century, with sea traffic increasing year on year, a lifeboat that could tackle these ferocious conditions to rescue shipwrecked sailors was desperately needed, and the enterprising men of Shields rose to the challenge. In Rescues in the Surf Stephen Landells tells the dramatic story of the invention and development of the Shields rowing lifeboats and their rival pioneers Willie Wouldhave, and Henry Greathead. The fortunes of the Tyne lifeboats are followed to the present day along with the history of the Tyne Lifeboat Institution, and the Volunteer Life Brigades. Introduced by the Duke of Northumberland, this generously illustrated book an extensive list of rescues and wrecks from the 1720s to the 1930s. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. It is the spring of 1953 and artist and naturalist James Alder is spending a lot of time in the unlikely setting of Walker Naval Yard on the Tyne - a pair of kestrels has stolen a wire nest from rooks on the towering jib of a giant crane and they are raising a family. Over several weeks James photographs and records the kestrels' progress and his account soon appears in Newcastle Evening Chronicle. His subsequent rescue of a fledgling that has the misfortune to fall into a bucket of oil leads him to a close understanding of the young bird, which he later successfully returns to the wild. When James Alder died in 2007, his son Rod Alder discovered among his father's papers the unfinished dramatic account of the young kestrel's adventures. Rod completed the story and illustrated it with his own, and his father's, fine drawings and paintings. The Kestrel in the Crane is the result. A vivid, unforgettable and unsentimental tale of the teeming wildlife that flourished on the banks of the industrial Tyne in the early 1950s, and still flourishes there today. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Who invented the hydraulic crane and the Armstrong Gun? Who founded Elswick Works, once Tyneside's largest employer? Who built Newcastle's famous Swing Bridge? Who owned the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity? All this was the work of one man - Lord Armstrong of Cragside. Born in 1801 he was one of the most influential men in the North East during the Victorian era. This pioneering engineer was also a great philanthropist. His generosity helped to establish many institutions that still thrive in Newcastle today. They include the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle University and the Hancock Museum. He also gave Jesmond Dene to the city. First published in 2001, this new edition is completely revised with extra chapters and many new photographs. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
