Maroon Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1955. First edition. xii, 150pp. and 48 black and white plates. This study of early Scottish bookbinding extends from the earliest record of the craft in Scotland (1432) and the earliest known binding, executed towards the end of the same century, to 1650. It is based on a doctoral thesis submitted to the University of Aberdeen in 1951, revised and substantially condensed. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a gold shield on the front board. The case of the book is in excellent condition with light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with an inscription dated 1955 on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine ends are bumped and nicked. There are a few small tears of up to about 1/4" on the top and bottom front edges.
