Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Whilst it is a constant throughout history that conflict has inspired and engendered great art, it is much rarer event for art to impact directly upon the vicissitudes of war. Yet, in the course of the First World War, a collision of naval strategy and the nascent modern art movement, led to some 2000 British ships going to sea as the largest painted modernist canvases in the world covered in abstract, clashing, decorative and geometric designs in a myriad of colours. Dazzle had arrived. Heavily inspired by the Cubism and British Vorticism art movements, dazzle was conceived and developed by celebrated artist and then naval commander Norman Wilkinson. Dazzle camouflage rejects concealment in favor of disruption. It seeks to break up a ship s silhouette with brightly contrasting geometric designs to make a vessel s speed and direction incredible difficult to discern both critical factors in the early years of the torpedo. False painted bow-waves and sterns were used to confuse and throw off the deadly U-boat captains by up to 55%. The high contrast shapes and colours further made it very difficult to match up a ship in the two halves of an optical naval rangefinder. Some questioned dazzle's effectiveness but, combined with the adoption of the convoy system led to a considerable reduction in the number of merchant ships losses. Dazzle camouflage was adopted internationally first by the US Navy and its use was continued by the major navies right through to the Second World War and beyond, although the development of radar and aircraft range lessened its effectiveness. This new book traces the development of the Dazzle aesthetic from theory into practice and beyond. It looks at the impact that dazzle was to have on art, especially in the work of Edward Wadsworth, Charles Pears and Wilkinson himself. It takes the story further and looks at how dazzle impacted upon many aspects of art and design from record covers to fashion and also showcases the wonderful tributes that contemporary artists, such as Peter Blake and Tobias Rehberger, have made by painting ships and ferries as a timely means to mark the ongoing centenary of the First World War. The first publication to address the achievements of the acclaimed marine artist Norman Wilkinson in tandem with his hand-picked Dazzle painting team. Superbly and copiously illustrated by sketches, designs, artworks, photographs and ship models. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardback. Condition: Mint. First Edition. THE COLD WAR SPY POCKET MANUAL The Official Field-Manuals for Espionage Spycraft and Counter-Intelligence. Philip Parker. Pool of London Press, Oxford. 2015 First edition ISBN 9781910860021 194pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in mint unread condition bound in illustrated cloth covered boards, a dust wrapper is not called for. The text block is unmarked, tight, white, bright and square. Some twenty-five years after its conclusion, yet with its echoes resonating once more in contemporary East-West relations, the rigors and detail of many aspects of the Cold War are becoming increasingly of interest. Furthermore, at the very same time many of the records of the period are beginning to become accessible for the first time. At the forefront of this unique conflict, that divided the world into two opposing camps for over four decades, were the security services and the agents of these secretive organizations. The Cold War Pocket Manual presents a meticulously compiled selection of recently unclassified documents, field-manuals, briefing directives and intelligence primers that uncover the training and techniques required to function as a spy in the darkest periods of modern history. Material has been researched from the CIA, MI5 and MI6, the KGB, the STASI as well as from the Middle East security services and on into China and the East. As insightful as any drama these documents detail, amongst many other things, the directives that informed nuclear espionage, assassinations, interrogations and the turning of agents and impacted upon the Suez Crisis, the Hungarian Uprising, the Cambridge Five and the most tellingly the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Contains a full introduction and commentary provided by leading historian and former diplomat Philip Parker. Complete with a catalogue of, and often instructions for, genuine espionage devices including lock decoders, bugging equipment, a 4.5mm single-shot lipstick gun, microfilm concealing coins and cameras mounted in clothing or pens and shoe-concealed tracking devices. Presents for the first time the insightful documents, many of which inspired Cold War novelists including John Le Carré, Len Deighton and Ian Fleming, and many of which they would never have seen. Ref NN5.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First published in 1932, this is a first edition, first impression of the new edition, published 2015. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of decorated covers and spine, no jacket as issued, slight lean, no inscriptions, price on back cover (£12.99), internally clean and tight, overall a vg copy. 192pp. With her medical studies cut short by the 1914 German invasion, her house burned down and her father arrested as a suspected 'sharpshooter', it was perhaps unsurprising that the multi lingual Marthe Mckenna (nee Cnockaert, codename 'Laura') was recruited by British Intelligence. At the time she worked as a nurse tending the wounds of occupying soldiers, and as a waitress in her parents' café in the Belgian border town of Roulers. 'I Was a Spy!' is McKenna's vivid narrative of these breath taking adventures as she, aided by a gallant band of loyal locals, goes undercover to sabotage enemy phone lines, report suspicious activity or train movements, and even instigate an aerial attack on a planned visit by the Kaiser. This account goes on to explain how, in 1916, the young nurse was caught by the Germans placing dynamite in a disused sewer tunnel underneath an ammunition dump. She was sentenced to the firing squad and only survived due to the Iron Cross honour received as a result of her earlier medical service . Marthe Mckenna (1892-1966), was later mentioned by Douglas Haig in British Despatches and was awarded the French and Belgian Orders of the Legion of Honour for her espionage work. Marthe and her husband Jock McKenna moved to Manchester during World War II and, despite her retirement, she was listed in 'The Black Book' of prominent subjects to be arrested by the Nazis in the case of a successful invasion of Britain. The McKennas later returned to Marthe's family home in Westrozebeke, and no further books were forthcoming after the McKennas' marriage ended around 1951. Marthe was portrayed by Madeleine Carroll in Victor Saville's 1933 film 'I Was a Spy' based on her memoirs.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The Jungle Survival Pocket Manual brings together the official manuals and information that enabled the Allies to fight in Burma, Malaya, Thailand, Indochina, Singapore and the Pacific Islands and win the war. During the Second World War, British and American soldiers were sent to new and challenging theatres, fighting to survive not only encounters with the enemy but the landscape they found themselves in. Being posted to South-East Asia and the Pacific to fight the Japanese meant soldiers had to learn to survive in the tropics, fighting and living in endless steamy jungle and perilous swamps. In this environment, men had to be able to take care of themselves rather than relying on their unit to supply their needs, something which did not come naturally to the many soldiers born and raised in cities. To help them in this completely alien environment, the British and US armies produced a number of official training manuals and guides to explain to the men how to identify and fight the Japanese and avoid their deadly panji traps, but also jungle lore : how to find and cook plants that were safe to eat; which animals and insects could kill them; how to identify and treat tropical illnesses and diseases; and avoid the dangers of polluted water and cannibals. The Jungle Survival Pocket Manual brings together the official manuals and information that enabled the Allies to fight in Burma, Malaya, Thailand, Indochina, Singapore and the Pacific Islands and win the war. Clothbound and presented in the Pool of London Press retro-styling, this volume will appeal to those interested in the South-East Asian and Pacific theatres of WWII as well as those researching their family history. It makes a unique gift for all those interested in survival techniques, and those of travelling to Asia. 20 diagrams and drawings reproduced from the original guides. The Jungle Survival Pocket Manual brings together the official manuals and information that enabled the Allies to fight in Burma, Malaya, Thailand, Indochina, Singapore and the Pacific Islands and win the war. Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.
