Paperback. Condition: Good. Written in journal form as a preparation for a retreat on Henri Nouwen, one of the most revered spiritual writers and guides of our time, this engaging book examines themes of brokenness transcended and integrated into Christian wholeness. Waldron takes full measure of Nouwen's often conflicted personal nature--struggles with loneliness, rejection, depression and sexuality--and professional--from brilliant tenure as a pastoral psychologist at Yale, Harvard and Notre Dame, to his call to personal ministry to the profoundly mentally and physically disabled at L'Arche Daybreak in Canada. He augments it with in-depth accounts of Nouwen's literary works, his interest in painting, iconography, music, and clowning. The result is this poignant, multifaceted work that resounds in its chief conceit--the walk or journey toward wholeness is achieved through the balm of healing that we receive when we follow Jesus' example and take on the crosses of the broken and weak. Students and scholars of art, literature, psychology, and religion, followers of Nouwen, retreatants, and the general public, will find this work compelling. Highlights: - A fascinating read, as well as a call to a code of conduct embracing the Christian way of the cross. - A font of information on Nouwen's seminal works, including: The Return of the Prodigal Son, Behold the Beauty of the Lord: Praying with Icons, The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom, Genesee Diary, Sabbatical Journey, Clowning in Rome, as well as Michael Ford's Wounded Prophet, A Portrait of H. M. Nouwen, Shakespeare's King Lear, the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, the spirituality of Thomas Merton, and much more. - Tackles sensitive questions of sexuality. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

The program/process contains twenty-four sessions divided under three headings-Precatechumenate, Catechumenate, and Period of Purification and Enlightenment-and covers such diverse topics as the basics of a Christian lifestyle, a review of fundamental Roman Catholic doctrine, and a deeper look at faith as a young Catholic emerging into adulthood. The program fits well into one academic year if meetings are weekly, or two academic years if meetings are monthly. Included are discussion questions, prayers, and instructions for retreats. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In this thought-provoking address given to the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Walter Kasper, whom Pope Francis has called a superb theologian, discusses everything that is beautiful about the family without avoiding its problems. According to Cardinal Kasper, the family functions as a small domestic church that can be a privileged route to evangelization. He speaks of this domestic church in a broad sense that includes the nuclear family as well as communities, parish groups, and other organizations. Cardinal Kasper considers the rediscovery of the gospel of the family, the family's place in the order of creation, and the vision of the family in the Book of Genesis and in God's plan. The cardinal then reflects on the structures of sin within the family, including family problems, tensions between men and women, and the suffering of women and mothers. Finally, he concludes with a discussion of the family in the Christian order of redemption, drawing from the gospels and other New Testament texts about the family, such as St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians. He discusses marriage as a sacrament and its sanctifying grace. The cardinal also mentions the issue of those who have remarried after divorce. He stresses the need to unite pastoral care, the words of Jesus, and an understanding of divine mercy in responding to these Catholics. Yesterday, before falling asleep, though not to fall asleep, I read, or re-read, Cardinal Kasper's remarks. I would like to thank him, because I found a deep theology, and serene thoughts in theology. It is nice to read serene theology. It did me well and I had an idea, and excuse me if I embarrass Your Eminence, but the idea is this: this is called doing theology while kneeling. Thank you. Thank you. - Pope Francis. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. There are libraries of books on theodicythe branch of philosophy and theology that wrestles with how God can allow a world to exist within which there is suffering and pain. The problem with these libraries is that they contain books that are generally written by professionals for their peers. Where the Hell Is God? combines the best of the professionals insights with the authors own experience and insights to speculate on how believers can make sense of their Christian faith when experiencing tragedy and suffering. Starting with a very personal story of the author's sister being left a quadriplegic from a car accident twenty years ago, Where the Hell Is God? gently leads the reader through some take-home messages that are sane, sound, and practical. Among these messages are: God does not directly send pain, suffering, and disease. God does not punish us; God does not send accidents to teach us things, though we can learn from them; and God does not will earthquakes, floods, droughts, or other natural disasters. This concise, accessible, and experience-based book will help people who are suffering as well as those who minister to them and their families. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "The spiritual journey," writes Thomas Keating, "is not a career or a success story. It is a series of humiliations of the false self that becomes more and more profound. These make room inside us for the Holy Spirit to come in and heal. What prevents us from being available to God is gradually evacuated. We keep getting closer and closer to our center. Every now and then God lifts a corner of the veil and enters into our awareness through various channels, as if to say, 'Here I am. Where are you? Come and join me.' "Father Keating writes with the simplicity and depth that emerges from more than fifty years of practicing to become a friend of God'in this case as a Cistercian monk, abbot, and spiritual advisor. Those of us who learn from him are grateful forand blessed byhis gifts.Elaine Pagels"In an era when the commodification of spirituality in America seems inescapable, his presence and message [are] genuinely inspiring."Ronald F. Thiemann"The spiritual journey, says Thomas Keating, is a journey of self-discovery, since the encounter with God is also an encounter with one's deepest self. As we come closer to God, we encounter the wellsprings of our own makeup, the hidden chambers of our personality and behavior. God calls us to live in a real world as mature people. And so, growing in God's grace is a gradual process of stepping into the light, of owning up to ourselves and becoming fully human.""To insulate themselves against the pain of living, many peopleincluding many Christians develop "homemade" selves where they feel protected. But this behavior is radically challenged by Christ, who calls people to repent and reclaim their true selves, bestowed on them by their creator.""The practice of contemplative prayer assists in this process. But contemplative prayer can also be a dangerous place where primitive emotions are let loose. For this reason, those who desire a profound relationship with God would do well to seek the guidance of a loving companion who can journey with them and bring them to a place of healing and mature life."Harold W. Wit, Harvard University, 1998 This is a reflection on contemplative prayer, the search for happiness, and our need to explore the inner world. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The theme of the book is the self-outpouring in love, or the kenosis, of Jesus Christ. The kenosis of the Son of God is at the heart of the identity of the Sisters of Jesus of Nazareth, for whom these reflections were initially composed. In baptism we are all plunged into the self-emptying life of Jesus and are called to live out this way of love in whatever situations we find ourselves. It is not surprising, then, that while the book was originally written to benefit a particular religious community it is, in fact, deeply significant to all followers of Jesus.Extravagant Love is not a sustained treatise on the kenosis of the Son of God. The mystery is too great for that. Rather, Ruth Burrows draws together scriptural and theological insights and her own lived experience of over seventy years as a Carmelite nun to offer various streams into the unfathomable ocean of Gods self-giving, ecstatic love. Each reflection is intended to begin in reading and to continue in prayerful pondering and contemplative wonder. "In baptism we are all plunged into the self-emptying life of Jesus, and we are called to live our lives in this way of love. Ruth Burrows draws together insights from Scripture and theology, as well as her experience as a Carmelite for seventy years"-- Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
